Book Review: Carpentry and Cocktails

Author Nora Everly
Title: Carpentry & Cocktails
Publish Date: April 28, 2020
Buy: Amazon
Book Blurb: Everett Monroe can’t keep his eyes off his gorgeous tenant.

He’d like to put his hands on her too, but she’s prickly, closed-off, and gives new meaning to the word disgruntled. In other words, she’s his perfect match and he’ll do anything to make her see it too.

Willa Hill has finally left her teen runaway past behind and wants a fresh start—alone. Men are nothing but trouble and she’s had enough man-trouble to last a lifetime. Too bad her irresistibly sexy, nerdy-hot landlord doesn’t agree.

When their mutual yearning becomes a white-hot fling and passion crosses carefully drawn, albeit one-sided boundaries, Everett finds himself in love and Willa finds herself in a pickle.

Because, unfortunately, when she returned to Green Valley, her problems came too. When the past she escaped crashes into the future she finds herself wanting more than anything, will Willa stay in Green Valley?

Or will she run away again?

Carpentry and Cocktails is book #5 in the Green Valley Library series. It is a full-length contemporary romance novel, and can be read as a standalone.

Review: I am so thankful for discovering The Page Nerds group on Facebook. If it weren't for them, I never would have found authors like Andrea Johnston and now Nora Everly. I read my first book of Nora's at the beginning of the year and I loved it.

I have wanted to read the books in the Green Valley Public Library series for awhile and I was thrilled to get a chance at reading Carpentry and Cocktails. I've been back at reading romance again and Nora's books are part of the reason I'm getting back into the genre.

Why?

Characters like Willa and Everett that feel so darn real. They aren't super rich (Greek Billionaire's etc) or even glamorous. What they are are people you feel like you could know.

I loved Everett and all his geeky wonderfulness. I'd love to watch Firefly with both of them.

Willa's situation is an interesting one for a romance novel. She's running from an abusive ex that doesn't think she should be his ex. (side note...I think said ex backed off a little too easily in the end without enough drama) What I did love was watching her learn to stick up for herself, even if it meant getting away from her mother. (Bad mothers always make me sad in books) Willa's mom was hard to wrap my head around because she had mistakes in her life, but she couldn't forgive her daughters and she was really verbally/mentally abusive to them.

I loved how her sisters stuck by her, and I really loved her relationship with her youngest sister, Gracie. She was one smart teenager, who was definitely wise beyond her years. (She deserves a story somewhere down the line)

Oh but back to the romance aspect of this book. OMG! Everett is the kind of man you want to have your back (And you front and anywhere else). Their chemistry is off the charts. I loved his protective nature that didn't send him flying into the Alpha Male category. It made him more knight in shining armor.

This is a feel good romance, with a little suspense from the ex and a bunch of laughs in between. Nora Everly should be on you must read list of authors and this book is a good place to start!

Book Review: Bought For The Greek's Revenge

Author: Lynne Graham
Title: Bought For The Greek's Revenge
Publisher: Harlequin Presents
Publish Date: May 24, 2016
Buy: Amazon
Book Blurb:  Bedded for the Greek's pleasure!

Ella Palmer has neither the money nor the connections to warrant the interest of Nikolai Drakos's archenemy. Yet the unassuming beauty has done just that—and claiming her will be Nikolai's ultimate satisfaction!

The ruthless tycoon will use any means necessary to ensure Ella's compliance, so he buys out her family's debts. Debts he'll forgive if Ella becomes his mistress. But when he discovers the true extent of her innocence, Nikolai is forced to consider something new; it appears the indomitable Greek is about to take a bride!

Review: I'm not even sure how to review this book. I've read a lot of Harlequin Presents and they are all pretty much the same formula, but some of them are fun reads that I can usually devour in a few hours or a day at most.

Not so this one.

Ella is the typical innocent, big hearted girl who is persuaded into a relationship by Alpha male Nikolai who is trying to save women from the evil Cyrus, because Cyrus caused harm to his sister.

cough cough ....SNORE....

This book took me days to read because there was just no action. There was no drama. There was no heat or spice or anything to make me want to keep turning the pages.

Ella was easily manipulated by Nikolai and then boom they are both in love and yada yada yada. Cyrus gets what he deserves and HEA. That's pretty much it.

Sadly not worth the time it took to read it.

Give Me Books Promotions Book Review: Heartless King

Title: Heartless King
Series: Standalone book #5 in the
Kings of Rittenhouse Series
Author: Maya Hughes
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: April 23, 2020

Blurb

Two blue lines. That means not pregnant, right? Right? Oh, sh*t.

Five years ago, Colm Frost asked me to marry him and I ran. I ran from my painful past too raw and fresh to escape. He was the only one who looked at me like I wasn’t broken and made me believe it. He made me feel it.

Now, he’s the hot, angry, hockey player on the mend.

I’m the physiotherapist who’s supposed to get him back on his feet.

I don’t think our night together was what his doctor prescribed, but that doesn’t mean I haven’t dreamt of him every time I close my eyes. I woke up beside him with my body still singing from the way he fanned the flames of my desire, but I couldn’t stay.

His lips on my neck. His hands wrapped around my waist. His impressive...ahem, touch leaving me breathless.

One moment of wild inhibition and it’s come back to bite me in the butt. Kind of like he did that night.

But a baby? Our night was supposed to be a one time thing, closing a door on the future I couldn’t handle.

Will this new bump in the road be everything we needed to find our forever?

Heartless King is a standalone friends to enemies to lovers, accidental pregnancy romance that brings all the laugh out loud, angsty feels!

The question had been running through my head all night: how could I get her to leave? But I didn’t want her to go. And now the maple syrup and cinnamon taste of her sent me hurtling close to the edge of my control. Those reserves were running on fumes.
Everyone else had been run off by my anger or blinded by my money, but not her. If anything, she battled me, pushing me like she knew I needed it. She wouldn’t let me hide the splintered and cracked pieces of myself that I was barely holding together.
She didn’t push me to talk, just slid in past my defenses and got me to say more than I should.
“Do you want me to stop?” I ran my fingers through her hair, tugging on the roots.
Her lips parted in a gasp and I deepened the kiss, needing to taste even more of her. She’d teased me, eating that French toast that smelled like a vanilla and cinnamon factory had exploded when it arrived at our table.
She stared into my eyes, heavy breaths shuddering past her lips. “Hell no.”

Review: Heartless King is one of the few sports romances that I've read. That's not a trope I'm usually into, but the blurb for this one intrigued me and I have to say, I absolutely loved this book.

I'm not really into sports, but when I do pay attention, its hockey, so this book at least had a sport I cared about.

Its the final book in the series, and I think I could definitely go back and read the rest, because I really liked all the characters that I met in this book. (I'm notoriously bad at starting series in the middle or end). I actually think I was considering one of the past books at one time and I'm not sure why I never did jump into it.

This book will run you through the ringer emotionally as both Colm and Imogen have baggage. Colm with guilt from his parents death and Imo with her own problems stemming from the loss of her fiance. There is a lot of stuff that both of them are dealing with and they are both emotionally damaged individuals and that makes them more human, rather than just characters on the page.

These two have a very strong chemistry though their relationship is an on again off again thing. They are definitely connected.

What I loved about this couple were they were both strong willed and Imogen was a strong woman. She was a carer, and actually Colm was too, but past events caused him to lose himself. With Imogen, her caring wasn't allowing her to be herself or have a life of her own. I understood and identified with her a lot.

Both of them had to work through issues to find happiness and I loved the way they did it, even though there were missteps along the way.

This was such a wonderful read! I devoured it in about 2 days, which is pretty good for me. I highly recommend this book and the series!

Ever since I skipped town last May to avoid a stalker, the threats against me have stopped, but my boredom is at an all-time high, and so is my anxiety. My family is in a particular line of work that makes a lot of enemies. That’s right, I am a mafia princess. Working at the Sex On The Beach nightclub on the Atlantic City Boardwalk has been the hardest thing I have ever had to do in my life. I hate what that says about who I used to be. I know my family would hate that I even work here if I had told them where I was.
If the name does not tell you what this club is all about, the atmosphere and pretty much general lack of morals will. It looks like a seventies porno set threw up in here and left shag carpeting and bright colored furniture behind. It is a monstrosity for sure. I am not sure who is behind the threats, but I knew I had to leave to protect my family and myself. It started with notes showing up in my purse whenever I was out. I opened them and promptly tossed them. Threats are not new to the Vitali family, and that is how we handled them. My immediate family consists of my father, Fabrizio, my mother, Fawn, my oldest brother, Brando; still older than me brother, Bartolo; then me; and finally, the youngest, Bella. I have a million cousins, though my favorite is Albie. However, our “you can’t touch me” mentality had run its course when I received a picture of my younger sister, Bella. It was taken up close, but you could tell she had no idea she was being photographed. She was laughing with a boy from her Drama class. That note gave me two options: either marry the stalker, whoever he is, or disappear forever. The picture told me that Bella would face the brunt of refusal to do either. I chose the latter and took only cash, my important documents, and clothes, leaving my cell phone and credit cards behind. However, the first thing I bought was a new phone. I knew that I wouldn’t be able to not talk to my mom. For some reason, I didn’t think that it was fair of me to drag my family into a fight they had nothing to do with. They have enough going on with the day to day shit they deal with.
I drove until I reached the ocean, which I have always been fascinated with. Atlantic City seemed far enough away to be safe but close enough if I decided to risk it and head home. I rented an apartment above a butcher shop and have been working for almost a year now, but I miss my family and my mom’s authentic Italian cooking. I cannot even remember the last time I had a meal that did not come from the bar or a fast food joint. If I am honest, I miss my mom’s hugs more than anything. At least I get to talk to her every once in a while, but it’s just not the same. Last year, I graduated from NYU with a dual certification in elementary education and secondary history with a minor in History. I got certified to be a teacher in New York, but then all this happened, and I never got a chance to get a job.

Review:  The 425 Madison Series is one of my favorite series. Let Me Stay is the last book in this batch of books.

I wish I could say it held up to the rest of the series for me, but it just wasn't the book for me. It had so much potential. Brynn's a mafia princess, Brendan's a game designer. There's an added element of a stalker. I mean this book should have been fabulous in spades.

However Brynn and Brendan are both virgins? That just didn't cut it for me, especially as Brendan is a fabulous lover? And he's never done it? And there is no awkwardness? I don't care how old you are, the first time is seldom perfect and full of sunshine, rainbows and orgasms.

And once again...the relationship is all sex. There is absolutely no reason for these two to be in a relationship. There's nothing they share in common. I'm kind of used to that in a romance novels but it doesn't make for a totally believable story. Sex will only get you so far and hit shouldn't = HEA.

Now lets get to the good stuff. The mystery and the fact that Brynn's folks are in the mob. They embrace Brendan easily and when Brynn's stalker becomes known to them, well Brendan easily becomes one of them.

I found the culprit to be a little easy to figure out, but I enjoyed the suspense at the end. It gives the book a little oomph and for me this story definitely needed that.

Everything was really fast paced and it felt hurried at times.

It was a quick read and I enjoyed it, but it lacked some of the wow factor that other books in the series had.

TLC Book Review: The Silent Treatment

About The Silent Treatment

• Hardcover: 304 pages
• Publisher: William Morrow (April 7, 2020)

For readers of The Light We Lost and Me Before You, a life-affirming, deeply moving story about lies, loss and a love that is louder than words.

“The premise alone had me, but The Silent Treatment itself is just heartrendingly lovely. It’s beautiful, so moving and clever. I truly adored it.”   — Josie Silver, #1 New York Times bestselling author of One Day in December

A lifetime together.
Six months of silence.
One last chance.

By all appearances, Frank and Maggie share a happy, loving marriage. But for the past six months, they have not spoken. Not a sentence, not a single word. Maggie isn’t sure what, exactly, provoked Frank’s silence, though she has a few ideas.

Day after day, they have eaten meals together and slept in the same bed in an increasingly uncomfortable silence that has become, for Maggie, deafening.

Then Frank finds Maggie collapsed in the kitchen, unconscious, an empty package of sleeping pills on the table. Rushed to the hospital, she is placed in a medically induced coma while the doctors assess the damage.

If she regains consciousness, Maggie may never be the same. Though he is overwhelmed at the thought of losing his wife, will Frank be able to find his voice once again—and explain his withdrawal—or is it too late?

“A remarkably assured debut which doesn’t go where you expect it to go. I very much look forward to seeing what she writes next.” — Jojo Moyes, #1 New York Times bestselling author

Review: This was a very emotionally charged read. This story was so beautifully written as we learn about Maggie and Frank and their marriage and what causes the 6 months that the two of them haven't spoke.

That's the whole point of this novel. Frank is telling his story as his wife is in the hospital having collapsed after taking sleeping pills.

If you don't cry at some point while reading this book, you have no heart. These two people's lives are so broken yet so full of love for one another that it hurts.

As Frank's story unravels and you learn of his daughter, your heart starts breaking, because its easy to see that she is going to be the cause of the strife and the reason Maggie is in the position that she's in.

When you learn the outcome of Eleanor's life, you won't have a heart because it will be dust on the floor.

This story was so beautiful and sad. It really is the love story of Frank and Maggie, as well the tragedy of their only child.

Both of them are holding back secrets from each other because they feel like they were unforgivable, but what they both needed was one another.

This is definitely one of the best and most heartbreaking novel I've read and its definitely a must read!
