Book Review: A Holiday By Gaslight

Author: Mimi Matthews
Title: A Holiday By Gaslight
Publisher: Perfectly Proper Press
Publish Date: Nov 13, 2018
Buy: Amazon
Book Blurb: A Courtship of Convenience

Sophie Appersett is quite willing to marry outside of her class to ensure the survival of her family. But the darkly handsome Mr. Edward Sharpe is no run-of-the-mill London merchant. He’s grim and silent. A man of little emotion—or perhaps no emotion at all. After two months of courtship, she’s ready to put an end to things.

A Last Chance for Love

But severing ties with her taciturn suitor isn’t as straightforward as Sophie envisioned. Her parents are outraged. And then there’s Charles Darwin, Prince Albert, and that dratted gaslight. What’s a girl to do except invite Mr. Sharpe to Appersett House for Christmas and give him one last chance to win her? Only this time there’ll be no false formality. This time they’ll get to know each other for who they really are.

Review: This is my Christmas in July read. I've had this book on my TBR since it came out. The end of 2018 was a bad time for me, so its been residing on my kindle waiting for me to decide to read it.

I've been struggling with books lately, and decided I needed a Christmas book to make me feel happy. Holiday romances have always been my thing. They always make me feel good, and this book did just what I needed it too, which was make me feel happy about reading again.

Sophie and Ned were a wonderful couple and their relationship was so sweet and it made me long for something like that in my life. They were an unconventional couple, forced together because Sophie's father spends money like it is going out of style.

Ned was going about the courtship all wrong and things were broken off and then Sophie took charge and suddenly love developed.

To see this relationship build because they acted like two people and not two romance novel characters made me love this book all the more. See these two people talked after their mishaps and they got to know each other and come to care for each other, the way "real" people do. They don't have sex and fall in love.

Ned was simply precious in trying to win her the way a Lord would, even though he's a man of the trade.

Sophie was a strong young woman that cared about her family and their problems, often putting them before herself.

It was so easy to love these two. Even Sophie's sister Emily who was a bit flighty and often selfish grew in the story.

The only character in this story you could't like is Sophie's father. Nothing he did endeared him to you and most of the time you wanted to smack him in the head.

It really was a wonderful little read with a whole lot of holiday spirit.

Book Review: A Gift From The Sea

Author: Anna Schmidt
Title: Gift From The Sea
Publisher: Love Inspired Historical
Publish Date: May 1, 2009
Book Blurb: A steadfast faith kept nurse Maggie Hunter going through the darkest days of the Great War. But her fiance's death overseas shattered her trust in God and her heart.

Now an injured man has washed up on the shores of her Nantucket home, and to save him, Maggie must put more than her skill and dedication on the line....Wartime tragedy cost Stefan Witte everything--and converted him to the cause of peace.

But to deliver vital information to American authorities, he must fight Maggie's stubborn refusal to believe or forgive. Soon he will risk his life to win her trust--and their heaven-sent future together.

Review: I was so intrigued by a historical set in Nantucket during WWI. I just wish the story delivered more. When Stefan is found washed up on shores, Maggie's parents rush to care for the man they much later learn is a German.

Maggie has lost all faith from the loss of her intended to the Great War, and is full of mistrust for the injured man.

I wish I could say I loved this book, but the story offered little to recommend it for me. It sort of plodded along with things happening that finally saw the two main characters coming to a common ground. (Love?)

For me the romance, and I couldn't figure out how it actually happened was lackluster. While I came to care for all of the characters, and your heart could break for Maggie's loss as well as Stefan's the story is perhaps too "clean" for it to have any oomph in the romance department.

The premise of a love that crosses the sides of a war might have worked if this were set in Europe or if it just had a little spice, and by spice I don't mean sex. I'm not a huge fan of super sexy romance, but it needed a few stolen kisses or something that really would have shown these two people falling in love. It went from I don't trust you to I love you without enough development for me.

The ending had some nice drama though, both for the couple and family.

It was a sweet little story, but it was just a little bit lacking.

Kevin
With everyone around me settling down, I’m happy to continue living my life single and carefree.
That is unless I can convince the concierge, Lucy Wilson at 425 Madison to finally take me up on that offer to go out on a date.
She’s beautiful, friendly, and her compassion for each and every one of the residents is admirable. Something tells me that she doesn’t see herself that way at all though.
This is why I’ve made it my mission to break her out of her overly cautious shell starting with a lucky penny and a $10 raffle ticket.
It was all supposed to be a little fun but when a large dose of lucky graces us, everything suddenly becomes unexpected.
Lucy
He thinks I don’t see him, but I do. Oh yes, I’ve been aware of the all too good looking Kevin Harper for quite some time now.
The thing is, I’m not sure that we have enough in common and I sure don’t have the free time for a social life between my job and school. Dating? That’s pretty far down on the list of things I’d like to check off - not by choice.
That is until Kevin convinces me that a little fun is good for the soul.
What started as a $10 raffle ticket turned into a vacation in Vegas and a whole lot of expectations that neither of us saw coming.
I always believed in fairy tales, but I wonder if what we have is too good to be true. I can only hope that it’s true what they say…
After all, 425 Madison is the perfect place to fall in love.

Love Affair With Book Book Review: Love Her

Title: Love Her
Series: Military Men of Lexington
Author: Andrea Johnston
Genre & Tropes: Contemporary Romance; Small Town Romance; Military; Single Mom; Slow Burn; Redemption of the Mean Girl

Felicity
The day I left that small town behind, I swore I’d never be back. I was better than Lexington and its small-minded residents. No one bothered to look beyond the mask I wore to protect my heart.
Then or now.
Sometimes life doesn’t turn out the way we plan. Having kids was the best thing that I ever did. Returning to the one place I’m least welcome might be the most humiliating. The one thing about this town is a reputation follows you. So despite life humbling me, this town won’t forgive easily, and my past bad deeds still haunt me.

Connor
Running from one war to another in the military, I spent years trying to find what was meant for me, to figure out where I belonged. It wasn’t in the city where I grew up or overseas. My soul needed settling and Lexington seemed like a good place to be alone.
Then I met her.
She owned my attention from the moment I saw her, my heart right after. Through the grapevine, I learned Felicity had a past worth gossiping about. So do I. Maybe that’s why I’m drawn to her.
I moved here for a fresh start, a second chance to live a peaceful life, but she has me reevaluating that plan. Maybe it’s not peace I need but love that I’ve been missing all along.

**The Military Men of Lexington series is a series of interconnected, standalone, small town romances.**
This is the final book in the MMoL trilogy, and the end of Lexington.

“Dating. Yes or no.”
“I don’t know.”
Because I don’t. Can I date? Sure. My parents would love it. Heck, I think my kids would love it more. Have I? Hell no. I’ve been too busy trying to figure out how I was so stupid to give a man nine years of my life to only walk away with a suitcase of clothes and a few photos.
“I would like to take you out. If I were to ask you, what would you say?”
He moves a fraction of an inch, one hand resting on the counter next to me. I’m not caged and could easily move if I wanted. I don’t.
“I think I would say yes.”
Slowly, he smiles. His big brown eyes brighten. I notice for the first time how long his lashes are. Slowly he blinks, his gaze dropping to my lips. My breathing increases in anticipation.
“Lis?”
“Hmm?”
“I’d like to kiss you.”
“Mm-hmm.”
He’s rendered me speechless already and he hasn’t even touched me. Slowly, he steps into my space, his free hand resting on my hip while he lifts the hand from the counter and cups my face. His thumb, rubbing circles on my cheekbone is rough on my soft skin, sending shivers down my spine.
Time stands still as he leans down, lips gently brushing across mine. It’s barely a touch, so light I wonder if I’ve imagined it. I know I didn’t when he brushes them again, this time with purpose. His lips are soft and full. I’ve wondered how I’d feel in this moment. The first kiss after Michael. I realize quickly this isn’t only the first post-divorce kiss, this is the best first kiss of my life.

Review: Love Her is such a wonderful read. I think once you get to know Felicity, you have to love her even though you want to hate her for her past. But every one can change if they really want it, and Felicity did.

Connor definitely wasn't the guy you'd expect to want to settle down, but I love the almost insta-love that happens to him, even though there's is a slow burn relationship. These two take things nice and slow as they find there way together, and prove that as a couple that things can work for them.

What I love is how good he is with Felicity's children and how much he knows that they are a part of whatever life he might build with Felicity.

Felicity is learning too. Sure her mean girl ways occasionally crop up, because they are sort of a self preservation thing, but she grows as a person too, with her new job and with Connor.

These two just worked so well together and I wanted good things to happen to them.

This is the last book in the Military Men of Lexington Series and I'm sad not to be visiting with them again.

The tent was suddenly far too small and suffocating. Abruptly the song changed again. Silently I thanked the DJ for offering me a reprieve. To keep from smothering in Vic’s good intentions, I pulled away and sought refuge with what was left of my cake.

Let’s face it, going back to the table was an epic mistake.

With Vic and Cara on the dance floor and Isaac MIA, that left a surly Noah McKay as the only occupant. And I’d walked straight to him, ready for a fight.

“What’s your deal?” I shot as I tucked my purple skirt beneath my ass and sat down—hard.

He opened his mouth and his tongue slipped out and across his bottom lip, then he took seduction a step further and pulled the shiny, succulent flesh between his teeth.

“Sweet baby Jesus.” I pushed the cake away and let my forehead drop to the table. I couldn’t live like this. I was vastly inexperienced in such things—no matter how much swagger I put on.

He laughed. “My deal? I don’t know whether to throttle you or kiss you.”

I stop in my tracks as I hear the front door slam. This is it. The plan is in motion. My heart beats faster, and my palms become sweaty as I try my best to remain calm in the denim jean skirt and midriff top that Monroe forced me to change into. I’m sure this is regular attire for her, but it isn’t something I would wear, and I feel very exposed at the moment. Jasen walks in with his briefcase, and immediately, my lungs stop working. He drops the briefcase down in front of him and watches me with the sexiest dark brown eyes I’ve ever seen. This is not the teenaged Jasen I remember. He’s bigger. Sexier. His muscles strain against the blue collared shirt he’s wearing. His sleeves are rolled up, revealing thick biceps. He looks like walking lust and temptation. He turns and opens a cabinet. “How was Philly?” “Good,” I answer as my body heats from nervousness. And other things. He closes the cabinet and turns around to face me. He narrows his eyes as he tears the wrapper off the granola bar in his hand. “You’re awfully quiet. Is something wrong?” he asks before taking a bite. “No, everything’s fine,” I reply. “How’s your sister?” “She’s doing great.” “So, you two are good? You’re speaking again now?” “Yup.” “Good, now you can stop talking about how much you hate her.” “What?” I ask softly. I’m not sure if I heard him correctly; did he just say that Monroe hated me? He stops chewing. “Oh, come on, you say it all the time, Monroe. How Morgan was the favorite, and how Grandma Rose always defended her no matter how wrong she was.” So, I had heard him correctly. I’m instantly angered. Monroe hated me. She betrayed me, so I should be the one hating her, not the other way around. Had I known about this sooner, I would have never agreed to help her. I snap out of it and answer his question. “We worked out our differences. Everything is good now.” He takes the last bite as he watches me. He swallows and tosses the wrapper in the nearby trash bin as he walks closer. My body stiffens when he stops right in front of me. Uh-oh! He’s entirely too close. His lips are mere inches from mine, and I can smell the mixture of peanut butter and chocolate on his breath. I can also smell his cologne. And it’s intoxicating. He places his hand around my waist and gently pulls me to him. “Did you think about my suggestion? Are you willing to try?” he asks. “Yes,” I answer as my eyes fixate on his. “So, you’ll go?” he continues. “Yes,” I answer again, mesmerized by his baritone voice. “Good. I think it will be good for us,” he responds. He leans in and kisses me, rendering me powerless. My eyes close and my mouth opens as I allow his tongue to enter. Sparks ignite every nerve ending. His hands make their way under my skirt, and he tugs at my thong, pulling it down. It fall to my ankles, and he lifts me up and on top of the countertop. I’m lost in the moment. It’s been so long since I’ve touched a man, and my body is all too welcoming of Jasen’s hands. My skirt is lifted around my waist, his fingers are between my legs, and he’s kissing my neck softly. “I’ve missed touching you. I want you so bad, Monroe… right here, right now.” My eyes fly open at the mention of my sister’s name, and I clasp my legs together just as his finger reaches my clit. “What’s wrong?” he asks. “I can’t,” I answer.

A demon deer and a ghost cat. Sibling rivalry and sexual awakening. Self-image and self-confidence. The chance for an offworlder to breathe free at last on a new planet. Those are just some of the diverse themes of these remarkable stories. Some endings are happy, some are sad, and some are intriguingly open-ended. But once you step inside the author’s world, you cannot emerge unmoved.

Read an Excerpt from "A Temporary Perspective"

Sloane had ordered Chinese take–out, a treat on their fixed income. Josh loved eggrolls, and his smile upon seeing the containers made her day.

After clearing the dishes and stowing the leftovers in the fridge, Sloane noticed Josh watching her.

“Josh, what is it?”

“Can I talk to you?”

“Sure, honey.” She put her hands in her lap to hide her nervous fidgeting.

“Mom, now that I’m in 8th grade, I’ve been thinking about what I want to do after high school.”

“You mean, like college?”

“Kind of. But not really. Mom, I want to join the military.”

Sloane stopped fidgeting, shocked. This wasn’t how the conversation should go, she thought. He was supposed to say something different. “Mom, I want to learn all about computers.” Or “Mom, I want to run my own business.” But the military? She must have looked confused, because she saw the barest flick of an eye roll from her usually respectful and stoic son.

“The military?” she asked.

“Yes, the Army—the Reserve Officer Training Corps, actually. It starts in 9th grade.”

Sloane didn’t know how to respond. Part of her was relieved, and the other part wasn’t happy at all. “That means you’ll be going away a lot.”

“Not until after high school,” he said. “Besides, Juan and Mark are joining ROTC, too.”

“Sounds like you’ve done your homework on this one,” she said. “I’ve tried my best to raise you to make good decisions and be practical.”

They sat in silence at the dining table. Sloane couldn’t help finding the irony in what was clearly her own inaccurate thinking. Josh wasn’t even thinking of her as an embarrassment or of himself as the only son of an abandoned single mother who was going blind.

“It could be dangerous,” she said. “I’ll worry.”

“Mom, it’s what I want. There are kids who get all messed up just crossing the street.”

Sloane shook her head in defeat. There was no arguing with the invincibility of youth.

Review:  Wild Wedding Hookup is the kind of romance that takes me back to the summers of my high school years. The summers I'd spend with a pile of Harlequins next to me in my yard while I worked on my tan on a picnic bench.

Sure this book is a lot sexier than the ones I read...to many years ago, but Mikelina and Bastian's story was just the right kind of fun that kept me turning the pages.

There was a lot of great drama from Mikelina's family issues and even more so with Bastian's family, as his sister's groom to be is a bit...uh ...flighty!

These two had great chemistry and they shared some really sexy moments.  OK they shared a lot of sexy moments, but that's what makes these types of reads so fun.

The conflict at the end was a bit predictable, but it was still a satisfying HEA for these two.

It was a great quick summertime read!

Historical Fiction Virtual Tours: A Flame Through Eternity

A Flame Through Eternity by Anna Belfrage

Publication Date: December 2, 2019

Timelight Press

Series: The Wanderer, Book Three

Genre: Historical Fiction

Synopsis:

It started 3,000 years ago. It ends now. Who survives the final confrontation?

According to Helle Madsen, being the protagonist of a time-spanning epic love story has some things going for it, primarily Jason Morris. Because seriously, meeting up with your fated lover after 3 000 years apart is not bad—at all. Unfortunately, where Jason goes, there goes Sam Woolf, yet another very, very ancient acquaintance—with the fundamental difference that Sam is not into Happily Ever After. He’s into destruction, more specifically of Jason and Helle.

Helle may believe in second-chance love, but she sure doesn’t believe in reincarnation. Okay, she didn’t believe in stuff like that until she met Jason Morris a year or so ago. By now, she has accepted that sometimes impossible things are quite, quite possible—like an ancient princess being reborn as an ambitious financial analyst.

Finding Jason was like finding the part of her that had always been missing—a perfect match. But handling Sam Woolf, the reborn version of their ancient nemesis is something of a trial. No sooner do you have him well and surely beat, but up he bounces again. Sheesh, will it take an oak stake to permanently rid their lives of him?

Sam Woolf is a powerful adversary. Too powerful, even. Jason and Helle will need help from unexpected quarters to finally bring this tangled, ancient love-and-hate triangle to some sort of conclusion. Question is, will they survive the experience?

Review:  I have to admit, Anna is one of my favorite authors, no matter what she writes. I love everything she's done that I've read so far.

A Flame Through Eternity is book 3 in The Wanderer series. Also when it comes to Anna's series, this one and The Graham Saga, you want to read them in order. Sure you can read them as stand alone books but it makes everything more enjoyable if you read them in order. Truthfully, I wish I had the time and attention span to go back and reread the first two books in this series.

I love the premise of this series, with lovers reborn and an evil menace trying to make sure they don't get to stay together.

This is the closing novel to the paranormal erotic trilogy. Oh and yeah I said erotic. Oh YEAH! This book is spicy. So if you are a person that doesn't like smokin' hot sex in your books, this is a series to pass on. On a plus side this is normal hot spicy sex, not BDSM, which tends to become the focus of 99.9% of all erotic novels and that just leaves me felling meh about those books. This book was hot and erotic and it kept the pages turning. So yeah, there's a story to go with all the sex.

For me, I found the whole series to be amazing. Jason and Helle just sizzle and Woolf is delightfully evil.

When some series end, people describe the last book as the stunning conclusion. In this case that would be an apt description.

The ending was explosive! For reasons I can't tell you, because it would spoil things.

If you are looking for the suspenseful and smoking series. This is worth every last minute!

About the Author
Had Anna been allowed to choose, she’d have become a time-traveller. As this was impossible, she became a financial professional with three absorbing interests: history and writing.

Anna has authored the acclaimed time travelling series The Graham Saga, set in 17th century Scotland and Maryland, as well as the equally acclaimed medieval series The King’s Greatest Enemy which is set in 14th century England. (Medieval knight was also high on Anna’s list of potential professions. Yet another disappointment…)

With Jason and Helle, Anna has stepped out of her historical comfort zone and has loved doing so.
