About The Rain Sparrow

Series: A Honey Ridge Novel
Paperback: 384 pages
Publisher: HQN Books (February 23, 2016)
New York Times bestselling author Linda Goodnight welcomes you back home to Honey Ridge, Tennessee, with another beautiful story full of hope, haunting mystery and the power to win your heart
Renowned yet private, thriller writer Hayden Winters lives a life colored by lies. As he is deeply ashamed of his past, his hunger for an honest relationship and dreams of starting a family remain unsatisfied, and he can trust no one with his secrets. He’s determined to outrun his personal demons, but the charming old Peach Orchard Inn and a woman whose presence is as gentle as a sparrow’s song stops him in his tracks.
Carrie Riley is afraid of everything from flying to thunderstorms, and pretty much of life itself. But meeting the enigmatic writer staying at the inn emboldens her to learn everything about him. When they discover a vulnerable boy hiding at the inn, Hayden is compelled to help Carrie protect him. Soon they’re led to a centuries-old mystery that haunts Hayden’s sleep, and his only safe haven is Carrie. As the secrets of the past and present cause their lives to become entwined, all that’s left to come to light is love—if the grim truth doesn’t tear them apart first.

Review: Linda Goodnight is one of my favorite Christian authors. I've read many of her books for the Love Inspired line as well as Harlequin Romance. She is a master of clean beautiful stories that pull you in.

In this book we have a guy that's a thriller writer (think Castle) and a girl that is pretty much afraid of everything. She's like the girl version of Charlie Brown.

This is a beautiful sweet love story that weaves history and the present.

HE'D TAKE A BULLET FOR HER

His key witnesses dead, Texas Ranger Garrison Travis had to protect innocent bystander Kenderly Tyler. Her crucial evidence had two very dangerous Texas crime families willing to do anything to keep her quiet. But Garrison's undercover status had branded him a killer, and now the bad and the good guys were after them both.

Hiding out with a handsome protector, on the run for her life, was so beyond anything Kenderly had imagined. While there was more than just adrenaline pulsing between them, the Ranger vowed his job was his life. Dare she wonder what would become of them should they actually make it out alive?

Review: If you are looking for a book that will keep you on the edge of your seat, Bulletproof Badge is definitely the book for you.

From the very start this story moves along fast and frantically. This book was an absolutely fantastic. Garrison and Kenderly (uh, I do object to this name however. Its just downright weird) are the kind of couple that you really root for the whole way through. These two have the most fantastic chemistry together.

I loved the plot, two mafia families at war. The two wives that were clients of Kenderly were murdered at a party and she was a witness. Garrison saves her and the wild ride begins, and trust me things get wild and sometimes a bit weird, as they are chased down by the mob and the police.

One of the best scenes has them going out in disguise a little retro and Garrison makes a comment that sounds like he's saying he is a virgin. Try not to laugh out loud while reading that!

This is the type of book that you don't put down until the last page is turned because you want to find out what is going to happen next.

I don't think there has been a book from this Harlequin line that I've enjoyed as much as this one.

·         Bon Appétit and a Book: A delicious recipe to enjoy alongside the book. (2 images with the Bon Appetit )
My characters rarely get to eat anything other than fast food. I thought I’d share my chocolate chip cookie recipe…since warm cookies definitely go with any story.
2/3 cup Butter Flavored Crisco, softened--not melted
2/3 cup margarine, softened--not melted
1 cup granulated sugar
1 3/4 to 2 cups brown sugar, firmly packed
2 eggs
4 teaspoons vanilla (if you use REAL vanilla, back it down to 2 teaspoons)
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
chocolate chips to your liking
nuts if you must

NOTES: You’ll definitely want a good mixer.  Invest in baking stones. The perfect cookie isn’t achieved on a metal baking sheet. The cookies bake in the oven for 8 to 10 minutes and they’ll be sooo gooey you can’t remove them. You’ll be tempted to put them back in the oven. If you know how a baking stone works, it retains heat and will continue to cook the gooey cookie while it cools. THAT’s THE SECRET!  Fortunately, I have more than one stone and can cook a batch while one is cooling.

If your cookies are a bit too soft, back off the brown sugar a tad. Honestly, I discovered Baker’s Chef brown sugar and have noticed a difference in the taste of the cookies when I didn’t use this brand.

Heat oven to 375 degrees.

Thoroughly blend softened margarine and Crisco. It needs to be one blended mixture. Add eggs, blend again. Add vanilla, blend again. *I do things differently, I add the baking soda, baking powder and salt here (realizing that most people add them with the dry ingredients, but I want to make certain they blend well--and after the flour goes in, it gets harder to mix). Add granulated sugar, blend. Add brown sugar, blend. Add 1 cup of flour at a time until all is blended. Add chocolate chips, but the recipe is great without them too.

Drop cookie dough onto baking stones. Another secret to a soft cookie is to make them larger. I had a bus driver accuse me of making mini-pizzas. Band kids always wanted second cookies, but the band director said they could only have one. HAHA…so I made larger single-serving cookies. But this rebellion helped me develop a very soft cookie.

Don’t squish the dough, just spoon it and let it sit tall, give it plenty of room to spread out when it cooks.

Bake 8 to 10 minutes (at least in Texas).
Cool at least 8 minutes on the baking stone.

"WE HAVE YOUR SISTER."

Liz Cantrell is terrified when she receives a call from a man holding her newlywed sister captive—and she's convinced her sketchy brother-in-law's involved. Willing to pay any price for her sister's freedom, Liz flies to Niagara Falls with the ransom: an uncut diamond necklace worth millions. But the moment she lands, a handsome, world-weary Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent takes her into custody. Blake Fallon's determined to catch a ruthless diamond smuggler—and the pretty antiques dealer trying to save her sister could be just the break his case needs. But as they team up to rescue Liz's sister and trap the criminal mastermind, a desperate standoff will threaten everything they hold precious—including their lives.

Northern Border Patrol: Keeping the US-Canada border safe.

Review: I don't often read Christian suspense novels. I always fear the amount of "faith" that is involved in the story and how it will affect things.

Ransom worked really well. It is a very clean romance with a strong mystery. Liz wasn't the typical  Christian fiction heroine. Though she was strong in faith, she was really smart and had a strong love for her sister.

Blake was great and though there was one point where I shook my head at his dialogue. I can't see any border control agent would describe Santini as "a bad man." This was a man that smuggled diamonds and had no qualms about possibly killing someone to get them.

Once I got past that Ransom was a very enjoyable story. The pacing was fast enough to keep my interest and a whole lot of drama.

There was the added villain in Ken who was trying to cut into Santini's business.

I loved the Niagara Falls setting. It made me long for the one vacation I had there when I was a little girl. I could really picture the frozen falls.

I loved the way the relationship between Blake and Liz grew even though they both had things in their past that made them weary of getting involved.

The other thing that bugged me was Jillian and her desire to stay married to Travis. He could have had her killed and she was ok with keeping her marriage vows. Sure there might have been some goodness in him, but stealing and getting someone kidnapped, that would have been a deal breaker for me.

It was a great read for this genre.

Terri has provided us with a playlist to go along with the book!

Song Playlist: A prepared playlist of songs that embodies the book’s characters and their love story.
I can’t write without music playing, the more upbeat the better. Here are some songs that make me think of my characters from Ransom and their love story.
  1. Niagara sung by Sara Evans --this country love song is so pretty, full of conflict and angst. And the book is set in Niagara Falls, after all.
  2. All for Love sung by Rod Stewart, Bryan Adams and Sting—the awesome talent of the three guys notwithstanding, this is such a powerful song and I think of Blake, the hero of Ransom, when I hear it.
  3. Some Kind of Wonderful sung by Michael Bublé—such an upbeat tune and the words are indicative of Blake and Liz. They both are so closed off yet they have all these feelings that they don’t know how to express.
  4. Waiting for a Girl Like You sung by Foreigner—not only is this my absolute favorite song from one of my favorite bands (I saw them in concert three times when I was in college-okay dating myself!) but also it speaks to the heart of Blake and Liz and the wounds of the past and the hope for the future.
  5. Here and Now sung by Luther Vandross—a throw back to the 80’s but one of the all time best love songs and perfect for Valentine’s and for Blake and Liz’s HEA.

Book Review: Nobody's Princess

Book Blurb:

Tiffany Desjardins has a plan. Well, she had a plan, until her past and all its complications came back to haunt her. Her not-quite-ex-husband, Luke, is missing, and suddenly everyone needs to find him--including Tiffany, if she wants to marry the true man of her dreams. Then there's Thomas Hunter, Luke's brawny friend, who won't take "no road trip" for an answer--and who won't stop showing up in her daydreams…

Thomas couldn't care less about Luke's personal life, but he needs to find him if he's going to make his fledgling minerals and metals company a reality. And if that means following Tiffany, who's taken off in Luke's rare Lamborghini Miura, he's more than willing--especially if there might be a chance to negotiate some of Tiffany's lovely curves. As Tiffany and Thomas speed along without a map, the only destination that seems certain is being together…

Review: I've never read Sarah Hegger before. This is the last book in her Willow Park Romance. Tiffany is a bit of a poor little rich girl, who is trying to change her life.  I wasn't sure if I was going to like her at first, but as she grew and found her real self she really was endearing. I really felt sorry for her too.

It was great to see her transform from the girl that just had to be beautiful into a real thinking breathing woman. Her soon to be ex's brother Dakota calls her Barbie, and when you get the descriptions of Tiffany, Barbie is a pretty good one for her.

Thomas was really great too, from the very start when she mistakes him for a male model. Oo la la. He's even better when you get to know him, because he's a nice guy and he really cares about Tiffany, and more about her than about her looks.

The two of them are great foils for themselves, but they have awesome chemistry.

Then there's Luke. I wanted a bit more of a mystery involving him, but that wasn't the case. Most of the drama involved Dakota. OK, a lot of the drama involves Dakota.

The best part of the book is Tiffany becoming her own woman, standing up to her father, who feels she's only as good as her pretty face, but as you learn her love of numbers and the way she works things out, without having much of an education, you know shes definitely much more than that. Thomas helps her to want more from her life. That's another reason to love him as a hero.

This was a great intro to this author for me.

PROTECTING CAROLINE
by Susan Stoker
Book 1, SEAL of Protection Series

Matthew “Wolf” Steel hated flying commercial. Luckily his job as a Navy SEAL meant he didn’t have to do it very often. He’d been unlucky enough to be assigned a middle seat on the cramped jet, but fortunately for him, the woman next to him was willing to switch seats with him. Hoping for a relaxing flight, Wolf was pleasantly surprised at the good conversation and sense of humor the woman had as they flew 36,000 feet over the countryside.

When Caroline boarded the plane to Virginia to move across the country for her new job she never expected to be seated next to the hottest guy she’d ever seen. She also never expected he’d be so easy to talk to. She knew he’d never be interested in talking to her if he hadn’t been trapped in the seat next to her, but it was a nice way to spend a long plane ride.

Neither Wolf nor Caroline were prepared for a terrorist hijacking of their plane, but if Caroline thought that would be the last time she’d see, or need, Wolf, she’d be sorely mistaken.

TLC Book Tours Book Review: Last In A Long Line Of Rebels

About Last in a Long Line of Rebels

Age Range: 10 and up
Grade Level: 5 and up
Hardcover: 288 pages
Debut novelist Lisa Lewis Tyre vibrantly brings a small town and its outspoken characters to life, as she explores race and other community issues from both the Civil War and the present day.
Lou might be only twelve, but she’s never been one to take things sitting down. So when her Civil War-era house is about to be condemned, she’s determined to save it—either by getting it deemed a historic landmark or by finding the stash of gold rumored to be hidden nearby during the war. As Lou digs into the past, her eyes are opened when she finds that her ancestors ran the gamut of slave owners, renegades, thieves and abolitionists. Meanwhile, some incidents in her town show her that many Civil War era prejudices still survive and that the past can keep repeating itself if we let it. Digging into her past shows Lou that it’s never too late to fight injustice, and she starts to see the real value of understanding and exploring her roots.
“Accomplished debut. . . . Strong secondary characters, including Lou’s thrice-divorced flirtatious grandmother, help build the strong sense of small-town community. Tyre masterfully weaves historical details into Lou’s discoveries in ways that never feel facile, while deftly and satisfyingly resolving past and present puzzles.”—Publishers Weekly, STARRED REVIEW
“Louise Duncan Mayhew’s perspective in the 1860s is an intriguing contrast to Lou’s modern narration at the turn of the 21st century. . . . The story addresses injustice in plain language that is accessible to young readers who enjoy whodunits.”—Kirkus Reviews
“Tyre’s debut features characters that are believable in their naïveté and sense of invincibility. . . . Louise’s account of their summer adventures, with chapters headed by entries from a Civil War diary, should please middle-grade readers looking for a solid story with an intriguing historical connection.”—Booklist
“The characters are true to life. . . . In the midst of solving a Civil War–era mystery, Lou and her friends confront racism in their own time. Lou feels deeply and is single-minded in her pursuit of justice. A solid debut novel for middle graders who enjoy a blend of history and mystery.”—School Library Journal

Review: Its been a long time since I jumped into a middle grade book, but this one is so much more than that.

Its a wonderful story that will appeal to young and old because the characters are so real. Lou is just so relate-able. (At least to me, she was). She's a fighter and she's fighting to save her house. She also cares about justice for Issaac who got screwed out of a scholarship by a racist coach. Actually, a town that still had a lot of problems with race.

There's a Civil War mystery to be solved too. Lou's family goes back 175 years and they have lived in the same home. In her quest to find the Civil War treasure, she learns more about her family, even though some of it isn't stuff that she is very proud of.

For a young girl, Lou was surprisingly mature, especially in the sleuthing she does to find the gold. You also see it in how she feels when she learns about her families past. I'm a huge fan of cozy mysteries, and I found Lou to be much more level headed than any heroine in the many series that I enjoy reading. She's really smart and loyal. I think the only bit of youthful stupidity involved a tree stump.

This is a fantastic read no matter what your age.

Book Blurb:
Newly single mom Beth has one constant, gnawing worry: that her dreamy eight-year-old daughter, Carmel, who has a tendency to wander off, will one day go missing.

And then one day, it happens: On a Saturday morning thick with fog, Beth takes Carmel to a local outdoor festival, they get separated in the crowd, and Carmel is gone.

Shattered, Beth sets herself on the grim and lonely mission to find her daughter, keeping on relentlessly even as the authorities tell her that Carmel may be gone for good.

Carmel, meanwhile, is on a strange and harrowing journey of her own—to a totally unexpected place that requires her to live by her wits, while trying desperately to keep in her head, at all times, a vision of her mother …

Alternating between Beth’s story and Carmel’s, and written in gripping prose that won’t let go, The Girl in the Red Coat—like Emma Donoghue’s Room and M. L. Stedman’s The Light Between Oceans—is an utterly immersive story that’s impossible to put down . . . and impossible to forget.

Review: There are some books that really surprise you. This book was definitely one of them. I expected something different, but this book was much much more than the thriller I thought it would be.

The story is told from the points of view of Beth and her daughter Carmel. I really liked that, especially after Carmel was kidnapped.

The way this story was told was totally fresh and though it was so heartbreaking at times, it was such a compelling read that it was almost impossible to put down. The characters were really well developed and as the story goes on you see how they change through the circumstances.

This book was really amazing and one I highly recommend
