Historical Fiction Virtual Tours Book Review: Queen Elizabeth's Daughter

Publication Date: March 18, 2014
St. Martin’s Griffin
Paperback; 320p
ISBN-10: 0312662122

Mistress Mary Shelton is Queen Elizabeth’s favorite ward, enjoying every privilege the position affords. The queen loves Mary like a daughter, and, like any good mother, she wants her to make a powerful match. The most likely prospect: Edward de Vere, Earl of Oxford. But while Oxford seems to be everything the queen admires: clever, polished and wealthy, Mary knows him to be lecherous, cruel, and full of treachery. No matter how hard the queen tries to push her into his arms, Mary refuses.
Instead, Mary falls in love with a man who is completely unsuitable. Sir John Skydemore is a minor knight with little money, a widower with five children. Worst of all, he’s a Catholic at a time when Catholic plots against Elizabeth are rampant. The queen forbids Mary to wed the man she loves. When the young woman, who is the queen’s own flesh and blood, defies her, the couple finds their very lives in danger as Elizabeth’s wrath knows no bounds.

Review:

If you love the Tudor period, Queen Elizabeth's Daughter should be on your reading list. This book provides a very different view of Elizabeth's reign, through the eyes of her ward, Mary Shelton. (though part of the story is told from the Queen's viewpoint too)

Mary is a character you will love because she is very much a teenager as the book starts out. She's spoiled and a little rebellious and she wants to do her own thing, but you do watch her grow as a woman. But for me, the real star of this book is Elizabeth I.

Queen Bess was always my favorite of the Tudors. I loved Anne Clinard Barnhill's portrayal of her in this book. She is shown with her flaws. This woman was very paranoid, but after having Henry VIII for a dad, who wouldn't be?

I liked the maternal side we see here. It makes Elizabeth more human and easier to like, even though she's wasn't a woman that you could really warm up to.

Queen Bess is one that so many author's paint as a hard woman. Wouldn't she have to be to hold her thrown? This book gives her softer side, showing her as a woman who loves her Robin and her "Fawn," but also a ruler with a bit of her father's temperament.

Mary brought out the good in her. I really came to love her and Lord Skydemore and their relationship. I felt terrible that because of the Queen they were never together enough for them to  have a family of their own. (John had 5 children from his first marriage)

If you love Tudor fiction, this is a great book and a must read.

Sprinkled With Kisses

Stacey McIntyre thinks she’ll pay off her debt in no time when Andi, Rachel, and Kim ask her to manage Creative Cupcakes’ stand on the beach. But selling cupcakes isn’t as easy as it seems. Especially when Dave Wright, the handsome owner of an ice cream truck proves he’s as determined as the dive-bombing seagulls to take away her sales.

Dave’s done with dating and done with beautiful, headstrong women like Stacey. Then the refrigeration on his truck breaks and instead of gloating, Stacey helps him out of a tight spot…and is rewarded with a kiss.

Now Stacey isn’t sure where they stand. Will Dave push her back into the role of rival? Or can she convince Mr. Wright that working together will lead to sweeter rewards?

Review: Sprinkled With Kisses is the latest Cupcake Diaries novel and it is terribly cute. Stacey is like that little cat that has a black cloud following her wherever she goes. Things just don't go right for her and she's a little, well more than a little bit paranoid about disasters.

When she meets Dave things don't go right, in fact they go from bad to worse. It is hard to believe that in 80 pages these two got together, but somehow they do.

Stacey's predicaments are a little hard to deal with, like the ex-roommate that is suing her for $2,000.00 and how she doesn't feel like she fits in with the Creative Cupcake owners, but you can't help but love her, which is much the same for Dave too.

This is just a super cute novella that is great bedtime read. (That will also make you very hungry for cupcakes)

Great Escapes Book Tours Book Review: Big Money

Big Money (Austin Carr Mystery)
Publisher: Down & Out Books (January 12, 2014)
E-Book File Size: 884 KB
ASIN: B00HHAOZN4
Paperback: 218 pages
ISBN-13: 978-1937495671
goodreads-badge-add-plus
Synopsis:
In this jaunty follow-up to Big Numbers, a scruffy stockbroker returns to tangle with mobsters, women and his own big mouth. The good news, as the story opens, is that the hero is in the company of a gorgeous naked lady. The bad news is that she’s pointing a shotgun at him. It’s a typical predicament for Austin Carr, a semi-shady New Jersey financial professional temporarily in charge of Shore Securities…He’s being extorted into opening a money-laundering account for local crime boss Bluefish; an auditor who was investigating his company has turned up murdered; a fetching state police captain figures he’s the key to her organized-crime probe; and his boss’s mother has been picked up for fixing her church bingo game.
Carr is continually getting into trouble over his weakness for breasts, his penchant for self-incriminating statements and his vestigial moral sensibility, which, like an appendix, makes itself felt at inconvenient times. — Kirkus Indie

Review:  I have to admit, I have only read a few mysteries with a male lead character. I spend a lot of time in cozy land, I guess. I'm really glad I ventured out of my comfort zone for Big Money. It was a hoot and a half!

Austin Carr is the kind of guy that you want to see on the screen, big or little. (Because detective/cop shows take themselves way too seriously, and that can't be said about Austin Carr)

This is book two in the Austin Carr series, and it will have you clamoring to get Big Numbers, the first book.

A few reasons why you should love this book

1. Characters named "Mama Bones" and "Creeper" oh and wait..."Bluefish!"

2. It is set in Jersey! LOL! Crime is always better in New Jersey!

3. You will laugh...you will laugh a lot.

If you are in need of a good time, and some laughs...pick up this book.

I have to admit, I should have guessed who killed the auditor. It was so obvious, and yet somehow it went right over my head.

Austin is the kind of guy that has a lot of bad luck...I do mean a lot of it. I mean, he has the mafia after him, but trust me, things end up good for him in the end...really good.

Now I'm going to ponder who could play Austin on the big or little screen.

Fiction Addiction Book Tour Book Review: What Belongs To Her

1st March 2013
She's ready to take back what's hers.
Since the moment a local crime boss claimed ownership of her family's fairground, Sasha Todd has dreamed of righting the wrong. Now it's time to act, and backing down from the man's estranged son is definitely not an option. After all, giving up her legacy to hot-blooded John Jordon means losing the chance to finally heal the wounds in her past.
Stopping John in his tracks—and resisting the sizzle between them—is Sasha's best defense. But there's more to him than she thought, which changes everything. With what matters most at stake, she'll have to risk a brand-new future with John, or walk away from the man whose heart belongs to her.

Excerpt

The machine rumbled to life and John froze.
What the hell??
Gripping the lap bar, he hauled it up and stood. Sasha Todd gracefully skipped up onto the steel platform beneath the carriages. She was dressed in white shorts that revealed her long slender legs and a simple red T-shirt. His breath caught. Did she have any idea how stunning she was?
She smiled, mischief glinting in her black eyes. “Sit down, John. Let’s take a ride.”
He blinked. “Are you crazy?”
“What’s the matter? Don’t you like rides?”
He tried and failed to muster some semblance of authority as the machine started to move. “No. Turn this thing off.”
She quirked an eyebrow and curved her fingers over the back of the carriage. “Yet you want to run this place? You can’t do that without knowing the fairground inside out. That includes the rides. Move over, I’m jumping onboard.”
Their eyes locked and once again, his tongue stuck to the roof of his mouth. Why the hell did the woman managing the fairground have to be so physically arresting? God, he wanted to write about her. Describe her in words in a vain attempt to let the damn world know how unnervingly beautiful she was.
He lowered into the seat, steadfastly avoiding her gaze. He concentrated on keeping his pride in place and not giving in to the temptation to grip the bar again. The ride picked up speed and the carriage shifted as she hauled herself up and sat down next to him, pulling the lap bar down with her.
The distinct smell of something musky and sexy drifted as she tossed her long hair over her shoulders. The tendrils whispered across his cheek and John closed his mouth, trapping the inconceivable urge to groan.
She wriggled her behind deeper into the seat and settled back with a sigh. “So…what’s the plan today? Enjoy the fair? Cook the books? Fire me?”
Attraction gave way to irritation, fueled by the nonchalance in her voice. “You do realize this thing is moving, right?”
She shrugged and glanced around before focusing entirely on him. “Sure. Now is as good a time as any to get acquainted, don’t you think?”
John swallowed. Jesus, her eyes are ebony black, like two huge pieces of jet. He snapped his face forward. “Do you know something?” He slid his arm across the back of the carriage above her shoulders. “If you want to play some stupid game in a bid to annoy me, that’s fine. I’m the one in control here, whether you like it or not.”

Review:  Once again, Rachel Brimble shows us that there's more to romantic suspense, than a tough guy protecting the heroine.  In What Belongs To Her, Rachel takes us back to Templeton Cove with Sasha and John.  (If you've read Finding Justice, you'll remember the setting and some of the characters as well)

What really makes Ms. Brimble's novels different from most Super Romance authors are her characters. They are all a bit damaged. There's something in their past that makes them weary of relationships and the opposite sex.  That's definitely the case here and there are secrets surrounding the fair that once belonged to Sasha's family.

Something about this novel reminded me of Blackpool. Maybe it was the fair and the corruption that surrounded the man who bought it from her grandfather. Whatever, I expected to see David Tennant show up (well at least in my mind) to help get things cleaned up.

But back to the characters, Sasha is not the typical Harlequin Heroine. She's gritty and tough as nails and prepared to fight for what she wants. I think that's what I loved the most about her. She doesn't want to like John, but you know that the two have chemistry.

If you like romantic suspense, you can't go wrong with Rachel Brimble. She's on my auto-buy pile!

Review: If you are a lover of regency romance and in need of a quick bedtime read, Wishing Game definitely should be on your list of must reads.

Its a short novella, around 80 pages long and totally sweet.

Mary needs to marry before her father passes or she will lose her family home.

She's had offers, but she's had her heart broken once before and she really wants to marry for love.

Enter her two suitors, Avery, the heir to the Earldom and her cousin James. There's no romance between James and Mary, but you wonder why they won't suit, though the reason they won't marry is hinted at.

I really enjoyed the story.

The scene with her horse Queenie was so touching.

I loved that this was just pure romance and that there were no villains to be found anywhere.

Definite a great regency read. Oh and the cover is just stunning.

It would be easier to hate Colton Townsend, if he weren’t so damned nice. And why did he have to have those arresting, amber eyes? They reminded her of a painting she’d seen of a lion. She couldn’t tell if he was about to devour her or cuddle her as if she was one of the barn cats.
Why was he encouraging her to marry? If she had a husband, he would have no inheritance. “My cousin would marry me if I wished it. He and I are very close, more like brother and sister.”
He made a sour face. “I suppose it is not a very appealing prospect to marry a man you think of as a brother.”
“No. However, if I were smart I would do it anyway.”
He frowned. Could it be he really was worried he would lose the lands and house? The tea arrived and she did not ask the incredibly forward question. Once the maid had left the parlor, Mary poured the tea.
“You could stay here, cousin.”
Her heart thumped wildly. “What, in this house, after my father is gone and you are the owner?”
He did not look up from his cup. “Yes.”
“As what, exactly, Mr. Townsend?”
His strange eyes lifted and his gaze settled on hers. She had no idea what the man was thinking. “Exactly as you are now, if you choose. I shall not put you out of your home.”
“And where will you be, cousin?” She used the familiarity he requested but bit out the word so there was no doubt of her distaste.
He stood up and moved toward the window. The rain continued to pour down. “I shall not trouble you much more than to stop and check the accounts from time to time.”
Her entire body grew hot with rage. Her voice rose in both volume and pitch. “Am I to be your mistress? Do you think me so desperate?”
His neck grew red. When he spoke there was no doubt, she had angered him. “You misunderstand me, madam.”
She stood up and carefully placed her tea on the table. “Do I? How will it be proper in any way for me to live in this house after you take possession? It’s already scandalous that you are here before my aunt arrives.”
“It is your house.” His voice rose over hers.
She took a step forward, refusing to be intimidated by any man. “No, sir. That is where you are wrong. When my father dies, you have the happy luck to be the heir to Heartshorn. If I stayed, the neighborhood would be aghast.” She took a deep breath. “I hope you will keep the staff on. I would hate to see them out of work after serving the Earl of Westbridge most of their lives.”
He crossed to her and stood towering over her with only inches separating them. His eyes flashed with danger, but she held her ground. Her heart raced and fear rushed to every nerve. Had she gone too far? She must learn to control her temper and stay her wicked mouth.
She thought he might strike her, but his hand came up and touched her cheek with a gentleness she wouldn’t have equated with the man or the situation. She watched his Adam’s apple bounce several times. His mouth opened and closed and his eyes flicked from her mouth to her eyes.
Mary could not have moved if the roof had caved in on her. She was in a trance.

He closed his eyes for a brief moment and when they opened, she could see his temper was quelled. “Forgive me, cousin.”

With a classical series sold and a portrait commissioned, Cherry Tucker’s art career is in Georgia overdrive. But when the sheriff asks Cherry to draw a composite sketch of a hijacker, her life takes a hairpin as the composite leads to a related murder, her local card-sharking buddy Max Avtaikin becomes bear bait and her nemesis labels the classical series “pervert art.”
Cherry’s jamming gears between trailer parks, Atlanta mansions, and trucker bars searching for the hijacker who left a widow and orphan destitute. While she seeks to help the misfortunate and save her local reputation, Cherry’s hammer down attitude has her facing the headlights of an oncoming killer.
  • Excerpt: There are many places you don’t want to be at zero dark thirty, but I’ve got a personal top three. One is the ER. Second is a police station. The third is your ex-boyfriend’s bedroom.
Thank God Almighty I was not in number three. Stupid does catch me occasionally, but not this night. I was nowhere near an ex-boyfriend’s bedroom.
At two forty-five in the morning, I found myself in number two. The Forks County Sheriff’s Office to be accurate. My cornflower blues were a bit bloodshot and blurry, but my grin matched Shep Peterson’s, who also found himself in a similar location. However, Shep had a drunk tank grin. Mine was more of a self-congratulatory grin, born from knowing that finally someone in Forks County had recognized my accomplishments in the art world. Never mind the phone call that woke me from a dead sleep and near gave me a heart attack.
Or that I had to drive my sister’s Firebird because her vehicle was blocking my driveway. Or that I now sat in the junior officers’ room with a cold cup of coffee and had just realized I had forgotten to comb my bed-head designed blonde cowlicks in my bleary-eyed haste.
And to put on a bra.
The Forks County Sheriff, Uncle Will, needed my expertise. That’s all that mattered. And I was going to get paid.
Needed me for what was still a bit vague. I hoped nothing needing brushed hair and a bra.
    * * * * *
With my messenger bag bumping my back, I hugged my chest, figuring it best not to give an extra show to Shep and the boys. I followed Uncle Will down the hallway, waiting while he unlocked a door. The door opened and two faces turned to look at us. One I didn’t recognize, but judging by his despondent expression, I figured he was probably in a mess of trouble. The other person, another deputy, I identified immediately. Hard not to recognize those brown ochre curls with the highlights I had decided were transparent oxide-red lake. Or the lean, muscled body, much like Michelangelo’s David. Or by the strong jaw buttressing two adorable dimples that made a rare showing.
Unfortunately, I knew Deputy Luke Harper a little too well.
He gave me a scant nod and turned back to the perp.
My hand snuck back to my hair and yanked on a particularly tall cowlick in back. I gritted my teeth and gave myself a quick lecture not to make a scene. We had aired our irreconcilable differences behind the local roadhouse, Red’s County Line Tap, a few months ago and I had not quite recovered.
“That’s Tyrone Coderre,” said Uncle Will. “He’s going to give you a description to draw. We need a composite sketch.”
Uncle Will stopped me before I entered the room and pulled me to the side. “Can I leave Deputy Harper in there with you or do I need to call in another officer? Harper’s the one who picked up Coderre, so this is his investigation.”
“I’m quite capable of separating my personal and professional life,” I said, tilting my chin so I could eyeball Uncle Will. “You might want to ask the same of him.”
“I trust Luke not to screw up his job. You are another story.”
I gave him a “why, I never” gasp.
“I’m going to be watching through the two-way.” He tapped my messenger bag. “Lucky for you, I don’t know other artists to call during the middle of the night. Wouldn’t want to be accused of nepotism. But I want a sketch while the memory is still fresh in Coderre’s mind. Don’t disappoint me, Cherry.”
“So, this is an important investigation?” Excitement zipped through my veins and made my fingers tingle. “I won’t let you down. You can even deputize me if you want.”
Uncle Will chuckled. “Just draw us a good picture. That’s plenty helpful.”
“Yes, sir,” I said and snuck by him to enter the room. I nodded to the man in the black sweat suit behind the table and held out my hand. “Hello, Mr. Coderre. I’m Cherry Tucker, a local artist.”
“Don’t shake his hand,” barked Luke. “Are you crazy?”
Tyrone Coderre’s cuffed hands retreated below the table, and I blew out a hard breath.
Looked like it was going to be a long night. At least the criminal had manners.
Couldn’t say the same for the cop.

  • Review: Hijack In Abstract is the 3rd book in the Cherry Tucker Mystery Series and like the other two books before, and the awesome prequel short story, you have a book that is full of mystery and hilarity.

When the story opens with Cherry drawing a composite in the middle of the night sans bra, you know things are going to be getting funny.

There's still romantic tension between her and her ex-Luke and her ex-husband Todd, who happens to be staying at her place. But there's also Max, and his mysterious badness makes him very lovable.

I absolutely love Cherry, and have from the first book. She's different from most cozy heroines that I've read. She's smart and caring, while still being a bit of a ditz. Her crazy luck makes me think of a Southern Stephanie Plum, but at least cars aren't blowing up around her. The thing that stands out here, is how she helps Tyrone's family after his murder. I loved how she cared about his son and grandmother.

You can read this book as a stand a lone, but I have to say, it would be better to have read the first two, because that will help you sort out Cherry and her relationships. (They can get confusing...probably even for Cherry).

The mystery, keeps you on your toes and you get to meet all the characters from the past books, who just add to the fun. Oh and you may even shed a tear at the end for Tater, the goat.

If you haven't read this series, you need to start now.
