Jenny is a survivor. Now running a group home after overcoming life in a cult lead by her manipulative father and watching her mother drink the poison he fed his followers, she fights to keep the light in the eyes of every boy who walks through her doors. “Why didn’t you tell anybody where you were?” It was the question that had always burned him. He knew that she didn’t have anybody else in the world who cared that she was okay as much as he did.
Jenny stopped suddenly and turned to face him. “Because I knew you would come and find me, and back then I knew I wasn’t strong enough to keep you away.”
Nik’s heart stopped in his throat. The pain in her voice cut him as deeply as any of his stab wounds had. Unable to help himself, he placed the palm of his hand on her cheek. Her face so looked so soft, so vulnerable and open. As much as he wanted to kiss her lips, he buried the urge. “I’m sorry, Jenny. I can repeat that a thousand ways, and I can show you a thousand times over just how sorry I am. I just . . .” Just what? Threw it all out of the window in a reckless fit of hedonism?
He shut the voice off.
This time it was even louder.
Jenny pulled away. “It’s probably best we leave all that alone. No point picking at a healed scab.”
“I don’t want to pick at a scab or have you hate me,” he said, sadly. “Or worse, I don’t want you to disappear on me again. I just want to get to know you, Jenny.”
“For what purpose, Nik?” Her eyes filled with tears, and he could feel the pain she was in. It mirrored his own. The pain that drove him to keep holding his makeshift family together so that life had some kind of meaning.
All out of words, he did the only thing he’d ever relied on for comfort. He pulled her into his arms and pressed his lips to hers, lips he’d used to watch as she sung, lips he could visualize around his cock as she’d given him her first-ever blow job, lips that he’d missed. They were soft and sweet, just like Jenny. Her fingers slid into his hair, her nails trailing along his scalp in a way that never failed to make him shiver. She remembered this. Their bodies remembered the way they were together. So did his dick, which was pressed up against her.
He knew it was over the moment her hands slid their way to his chest, and his heart broke all over again as she pushed him away.
“See, this is why I can’t be around you, Nik,” she cried. “It’s impossible to resist you. And we don’t belong together anymore.”
Nik shook his head. “Don’t do this, Jenny. We deserve a second chance to see what we’ve got. We are perfect together.”
“Were, Nik. We were perfect together. Don’t you see? It’s all past tense.” Jenny turned and hurried down the street.
“Jenny. Wait.” He jogged to catch up with her. “There was nothing past tense about that kiss, or the way you turn me on as much as you always did. There is nothing past tense about the way the sun catches your hair and turns it the color of a cornfield in fall. And I know you hate star references but there is nothing past tense about the way your fucking eyes light up your face like the Big Dipper, lights up the night-fucking-sky” he said. “I don’t want what we were to be the sum total of everything we ever add up to.”

Nights at Seaside by Addison Cole is the sweet edition of New York Times bestselling author Melissa Foster's steamy romance novel Seaside Nights. The stories and characters remain the same and convey all of the passion you expect between two people in love, without any explicit scenes or harsh language.

She’s happy as can be, preparing the shop for its grand opening and renting a cottage in the Seaside community while renovations to her new apartment are being completed. The only thing missing is the one thing she longs for, and has no control over—love.

Sawyer Bass, a professional boxer, plays his guitar at a local bar to escape the painful reality of his father’s deteriorating health and a recent health warning of his own. He’s honest, loving, sensitive, and potently virile—but boxing goes against everything Sky believes in. Review: I am coming to love Addison Cole (Melissa Foster).  The Seaside books are really unique. Actually most of Melissa's books are, regardless of the moniker she's using. Her characters aren't your typical "romance"  heroes and heroines.

Sky owns a tattoo shop. Sawyer is a boxer. (I'm tempted to read the alter ego version of this book, because the two characters are so interesting). Sky is a little bit of a hippy or as every one describes her, a free spirit.

Sawyer is so unique. He's a boxer and a poet, whose words are being tattooed on many of the residents of Provincetown. I love him for how much he cared for his family. I also love his father's connection with Sky.

Their relationship burns hot and they come together very quickly. I find these books to be more than sweet with heat. There's a lot of talk about sex and though there aren't a lot of graphic sex, there's a lot of girlie locker room talk.

The tension at the end of the book was obvious. I knew something like that was going to happen, because it had to happen. (I won't give away what happened. You'll just have to read the book)

I love getting to see the characters from the other books as well. (This is book 6 in the series). I've read several of these books and I do enjoy them. I love the friendships and the pranks between Bella and Theresa. Seriously the prank in this book will have you in stictches.

This is a book you won't be able to put down, once you start it.

Book Review: Meddling Kids

Author: Edgar Cantero
Title: Meddling Kids
Publisher: Doubleday
Publish Date: July 11, 2017
Buy: Amazon
Book Blurb:

1990. The teen detectives once known as the Blyton Summer Detective Club (of Blyton Hills, a small mining town in the Zoinx River Valley in Oregon) are all grown up and haven’t seen each other since their fateful, final case in 1977. Andy, the tomboy, is twenty-five and on the run, wanted in at least two states. Keri, one-time kid genius and budding biologist, is bartending in New York, working on a serious drinking problem. At least she’s got Sean, an excitable Weimeraner descended from the original canine member of the team. Nate, the horror nerd, has spent the last thirteen years in and out of mental health institutions, and currently resides in an asylum in Arhkam, Massachusetts. The only friend he still sees is Peter, the handsome jock turned movie star. The problem is, Peter’s been dead for years. The time has come to uncover the source of their nightmares and return to where it all began in 1977. This time, it better not be a man in a mask. The real monsters are waiting.

With raucous humor and brilliantly orchestrated mayhem, Edgar Cantero’s Meddling Kids taps into our shared nostalgia for the books and cartoons we grew up with, and delivers an exuberant, eclectic, and highly entertaining celebration of horror, life, friendship, and many-tentacled, interdimensional demon spawn.

Review:  I saw this book and knew instantly that I had to read it. I grew up on Scooby Doo. So how could I not love it?

Well let me begin to tell you.

This book has a lot of pros and cons.  Its a decent read, but not mind blowing. I did love that it paid homage to the cartoon I have always loved. There were many times in this crazy read that I kept saying, if you hurt "Tim" the Weimeraner I would have had to hunt the author down. (Seriously that's a no no for me. I hate when animals get killed in fiction) Also, I think Tim was my favorite character in the book.

So the Blyton Summer Detective Club are made up of one nerdy ex mental patient, one smart girl gone bad, one erm..not sure how to describe Andy, a ghost of a past member of the group that only Nate can see and the dog.

So aside from the number of team members and the dog, the only thing that will take you back to Scooby days was the guy who was originally arrested in 1977, who dressed up in a sea monsters clothes, and of course, a mask. After all, he would have gotten away with it, if it weren't for those "meddling kids."

I'm not sure how this book got lumped into horror though. It is most definitely not that. Its not the stuff of nightmares.  Maybe Scooby Doo meets Dirk Gently? Its more paranormal/sci fi, in my eyes.

Nate was really the human character that I liked. The escapee from the mental hospital, thanks to Keri and Andy. His break out scene was one of the highlights of the book for me, before they got back to the west coast.

What bugged me was the weird relationship between Andy and Keri (more so than Nate and Ghost Peter). So Andy likes girls particularly Keri and has since they were 12. Keri isn't sure if she can reciprocate Andy's affections, but there's all kinds of flirting going on. Plus the way Andy was written, I wasn't sure if she were transgender or a lesbian. This part of the story made me wonder what importance it had to the story, because it didn't move anything along. It also felt forced.

I loved when they found out who Dunia was. She was the ultimate baddy. It kinda reminded me of the big who is "Missy" in Doctor Who.

Overall, I'd say this would be a good read for someone that didn't have a connection with Scooby Doo. I was excepting something more and while it tried to deliver, it just didn't do it for me.

Praise for Back Home at Firefly Lake:

“When these two broken souls come together, magic happens.” – Publishers Weekly

“Back Home at Firefly Lake is a charming small-town, second-chance story. With well-written and relatable characters, readers both new and old to the series will enjoy it.” – Harlequin Junkie

Luc’s heart squeezed. [Cat] was embarrassed to ask her family for help, like he’d have been embarrassed asking his. Except, that would never be an issue because he had more money than he could spend in one lifetime. Money to finance the creamery expansion his dad had talked about for years, and to send his folks on that cruise they’d hankered after but could never afford because of the cost of raising four kids and putting most of them through college. Money for everything except what mattered most—taking care of his wife and their child like he’d planned.
“Pay for the hockey registration when your grant comes through.” He tried to smile. “I know you’re good for it.”
“Thanks.” Cat’s voice cracked and she took one hand away from her bag to rub it across her face. “Hockey means everything to Amy. I want her to be able to play, but she’s growing so fast right now.”
“Hockey’s an expensive sport.” He slid an arm around her shoulders and gave her a little squeeze. The same kind of friendly squeeze he’d given her all those times back in high school when she’d saved his butt in chemistry. Before today, however, his fingers had never tingled when he’d touched Cat. His body had never heated, either.
Cat started and pulled away at the same instant he did. “Hockey can be a dangerous sport too, and now Amy will be playing with boys. She hasn’t played with boys since she was seven. She could get hurt.
Like he had, hurt so bad it had ended his career. “Amy’s playing minor hockey. At her age, there is a rule about no body checking.” He tried to make his tone reassuring. “I promise I’ll keep a close eye on her.” It was his job as her coach, and he’d do the same for any kid. It had nothing to do with the strange and unexpected attraction he all of a sudden had for this woman he’d known his whole life, who he’d never really looked at until today.
A woman who wasn’t Maggie. Luc’s stomach clenched in a tangled lump of guilt and grief, tied tight with a slippery ribbon of disloyalty. Maggie was never coming back, but that didn’t mean Luc could forget her. Or that he wanted to.

Review:  I read The Cottage at Firefly Lake and enjoyed it, so I definitely wanted to read another book in this series.

This is Cat and Luc's story and its one of second chances.  Both are back home to Firefly Lake for different reasons but both of them need some healing. She's a single mom and Luc is a widower returning home to coach hockey. So it isn't your typical 2nd chances story. They only share a common friendship.

The best part about Luc was how much he loved his first wife. To many books with widows and widowers have the marriage be a bad one, and that always spoils things for me. I like that his relationship was a good one.

Cat's however wasn't. She's a single mom with a daughter that is more than a bit of a handful. I really couldn't understand Amy sometimes. There were a lot of times when I felt Amy needed some counseling..and so did Cat.  Cat had issues with her dad leaving and with the bad fling she had that resulted in her pregnancy. All of this impacted her chances of happiness. Amy did a few things that definitely needed a different kind of punishment or something. I wanted to like the little girl, but her mood swings were hard to handle, especially since she didn't talk to her mother about what bothered her.

Luc's reluctance to start over was more understandable. I liked how he truly cared for Amy as well as for her mother. He was a good guy. He seemed to be the more adjusted of the two considering he had lost his wife tragically.

The twist at the end was a little bit unbelievable for me, but it didn't spoil my enjoyment of the book.

This was a sweet romance, with a small amount of heat.

Summer on Firefly Lake

Sometimes love is better the second time around.

Mia Gibbs spent her marriage putting her husband’s needs before her own. And now, after a painful divorce, she’s building a new life for herself and her two daughters back home at Firefly Lake. The last thing she needs is a man to complicate things. But former bad boy turned friend Nick McGuire—and the one kiss they’ve shared—has turned everything upside down.

Attorney Nick McGuire wasn’t meant to be a family man. “4 stars! Gilroy’s second Firefly Lake novel encapsulates the quaint, busybody small-town feel and the slippery slope of friends becoming lovers quite well… Engaging…[a] fast-paced page turner.”—RT Book Reviews

About Jen Gilroy:

Jen Gilroy lives in a small town in eastern Ontario, Canada where her Irish ancestors settled in the nineteenth century. She's worked in higher education and international marketing but, after spending too much time in airports and away from her family, traded the 9-5 to write romantic women’s fiction to bring readers' hearts home.

Jen likes ice cream, diners, vintage style and all things country. Her husband is her real-life romance hero, and her teen daughter teaches her to cherish the blessings in the everyday.

The Cottage at Firefly Lake, the first book in her Firefly Lake series, was a finalist for Romance Writers of America’s Golden Heart® award in 2015. It was also shortlisted for the Romantic Novelists’ Association Joan Hessayon Award 2017.
