Book Blurb: A quirky collection of illustrated vignettes about love in its many forms
Like all great ideals, Love—the kind written with a capital letter—often seems elusive. So then maybe it's better, as Aurelia Alcaïs does, to talk about the kind written in lower case, the more intimate kind of love, the kind that intertwines with our lives and creeps into the cracks of the everyday.
With simple and elegant illustrations, You & Me & Why We Are in Love tells us about love in all its forms, not concerning itself with who or what you love, but above all, how you love. There's the requited love that Daisy has for nature, and then there's David who buys flowers for his wife of twenty years, not to mention Jean, the punk rocker who is secretly looking for a girl who is just like his grandmother.
Oddly charming and surprisingly sweet, You & Me & Why We Are in Love is the perfect impulse purchase for anyone engaged in matters of the heart.
Review: This is a cute little coffee table book of vignettes about love with some really quirky drawings.
The book is only 90 pages long.
The vignettes are really funny. The drawings are bizarre. Its the kind of book that you leaf through from time to time. It isn't necessary to read it all at once, though if you do, it won't take you very long.
I loved some of Aurelia's takes on different kinds of love were really funny, while some of them were definitely out there.
This is definitely a book to pass around when you have company, so you can share in its silliness.

Old rivalries heat up in the fourth Sweet Pepper Fire Brigade mystery from the national bestselling author of In Hot Water.
Fire chief Stella Griffin has been put in charge of judging the annual recipe contest, but Eric—her resident ghost and true culinary genius—has vanished. Before she can track down his latest haunt, she’s called in to investigate a local moonshine distillery that was set ablaze, making her realize there’s more than pies and cakes cooking in Sweet Pepper.
As rumors of a revived whiskey war ignite, Stella turns to the town’s elders to help her find answers. The past might have some clues as to what has sparked the present fires. But when following a lead lands her in buried rubble, Stella realizes she must extinguish this case fast or she might be going down in flames.

Review: This is the fourth book in the Fire Brigade Mystery Series. This is a totally unique series that mixes paranormal and cozy mystery in a way that will make you want more.
Stella is the chief of the Fire brigade and Eric is the ghost of a former fire brigade. At the beginning of the story, Eric is being held prisoner by a local psychic a long with several other ghosts.
I love these characters. Stella is a particularly strong character. She's not ditzy, she's hardworking and really caring when it comes to the members of her brigade and even more so when it comes to Eric, (the ghost). I don't think I've ever wanted a love match between a human and a ghost before, but I really like Eric.
The mystery in this story involves illegal whiskey (hooch) and as Stella tries to find out if there is a war between bootleggers, someone seems to be out to stop her.
I liked how the story mystery and Eric's ghosts were a significant part of the story, but you don't find out just how much until the end.
The characters are so well written and likable, even the ones you shouldn't like. I have to say that I do like Stella's grandfather. I know he's a questionable character, but I think he does care for her and even has her best interests at heart.
Fantastic book!

Review: Another cozy series that I've fallen in love with! I admit I try to go for the books with recipes, cos I'm that kinda girl, but I love magic too. This is book 5 in the series. (Now I have 4 more books to buy!) Of course I was always a girlie girl too, and love fashion, so there's definitely some appeal for that here too. It doesn't always have to be about food!
Melissa takes all the elements of a good cozy and sprinkles fairy dust on them to make her series different. She has characters that you will love and a mystery that will keep the pages turning. It was full of plot twist, but not to many to make you wish that you'd just find out who the killer is.
I love love love Harlow and the town of Bliss! Definitely a series to continue on with!

The Cookbook Nook is set to host the town’s upcoming Grill Fest, a tasty tradition which pits local amateur chefs against one another to concoct the most delicious dishes. This year’s challenge: grilled cheese. But with competing chefs bearing grudges from past years, more mouths are running off than savoring the fare.
The expression “too many cooks” proves all too true when the eight-time champ is found murdered in the alley behind the café. Soon a local diner owner (and Jenna’s “second mother”) is suspected of bumping off the competition, and Jenna has to douse the flames before the wrong person gets burned…
Review: I am really coming to love Crystal Cove! In book two of A Cookbook Nook Mystery, a local restaurant owners is found murdered in the alley behind the shop during the annual Grill Fest.
Inherit the Word, is really a fun read and the locals of Crystal Cove are full of quirky brilliance. Oh and I would so spend all my time at The Cookbook Nook and Cafe! The foods described will have you running for snacks while you turn the pages. (Thank goodness there are recipes included)
Jenna is coming along nicely as our resident amateur sleuth. She's out to clear her friend's name of Natalie's murder, and she has a mystery of her own to solve. Oh and Natalie's restaurant is called Mum's the Word.(Great tie in with the title of the book.) She finds a key in a cat statue that her husband had given her, and she has to figure out what it opens. I liked that there is real depth to Jenna. She's fun and she cares about people, plus she's not a great cook, she's really a beginner.
The real mystery is full of suspense. There are so many people with motives and just when you think you might have a clue who did it, you have to cross them off the list. Add another murder to the mix and the story gets even more interesting.
What you'll love about Jenna and her friends has to do with the lack of obnoxiousness they display. Sure they are trying to solve a murder that is the police department's job, but Jenna doesn't act like she's smarter than the cops. She wants to help.
Oh and for those of you that like a little romance, there's always Rhett. Nice that she only has one guy in her life too!
Definitely a great foodie cozy!

Review: Christmas at the Beach is a short novella that links the past novels 10 Beach Road and Ocean Beach with her next full length novel The House On Mermaid Point.
This is a super quick read, with what seems like more pages spent on teasers of Ms Wax's other novels. Christmas At The Beach is only about 50 pages long.
I really couldn't find the point to this novella. Kyra isn't a character that you really care about. She's a celebrity because of someone she slept with. Her son, is adorable, but there's only so much you can do with 50 pages.
What she does do in these pages is get you ready for the next novel, which is getting the ladies ready for the next Do Over house and some family drama which always makes a read more exciting.
Fans of the series will devour this while they wait for the next book.

Blurb:
A novel of art and desire in the 1930s
Blurb:
It’s 1935, and Desdemona Hart Spaulding has sacrificed her plans to work as an artist in New York to care for her bankrupt, ailing father in Cascade, Massachusetts. When he dies, Dez finds herself caught in a marriage of convenience, bound to the promise she made to save her father’s Shakespeare Theater, even as her town may be flooded to create a reservoir for Boston. When she falls for artist Jacob Solomon, she sees a chance to escape and realize her New York ambitions, but is it morally possible to set herself free?
Fans of Richard Russo, Amor Towles, Sebastian Barry, and Paula McLain will savor this transporting novel about the eternal tug between our duties and our desires, set in New York City and New England during the uncertain, tumultuous 1930s
Review: This is one of those books that you love or you hate and it all stems around the lead character, Dez and the choices that she makes in her life.
For me, I'm on the fence right now because I've read so many emotionally charged books recently, that at times some of the things that happened to Dez just felt like too much to me.
Yet, she is a strong women in a time when women were still supposed to be wives and mothers. She was a person who wanted to be herself. Its just that her decisions and how she went about making her choices that often put me off of her as a character. Rather than seeing her as ambitious and talented, she more often then not comes across as selfish.
A lot of the story revolves around the fictional town of Cascade that might be flooded to build a reservoir for Boston. The town may be fictional but the subject matter isn't. Many towns were flooded for this very reason during that time period. The vast majority of the story revolves around the town trying to keep from being taken for this reservoir.
When it is finally learned which town was selected, the story moves at a much faster clip, with Dez in NYC pursuing her art.
This is one of those books that pulls you in from the start. It is super emotional and can be uncomfortable at times, but still an excellent read. It is also a strange read. I say that because I couldn't like many of the characters at all, especially her friend Abby. I just couldn't understand how they were friends. Yet, even though I didn't like the characters I still found myself turning the pages to see what was going to happen.
The biggest surprise though involves Jacob, the Jewish artist she is friends with in Cascade. Her feelings for him are made known from the beginning of the book, and the outcome of their relationship will probably surprise you. I know it did me.
A very engaging read. Highly recommended for fans of historical fiction.

Book Review: In The Woods
Author: Tana French
Title: In The Woods
Publisher: Penguin
Publish Date: May 27, 2008

Book Blurb:
Twenty years ago, a young Rob and his two best friends went into the woods, chasing each other, playing in a castle of ruins. But they didn't return to their homes at sunset. A search party was dispatched to canvas the woods, finding only a catatonic Rob clawing at a tree, his clothing ripped, his shoes filled with blood.
Detective Ryan has always guarded this secret of his past, but the recent murder forces him to reveal it to his new partner, drawing them closer together in the search for the perpetrator. Is there a connection between Rob's childhood trauma and Katy Devlin's murder? And is Detective Ryan prepared to confront the secrets that lie deep in those woods? Suspects abound in this fast-paced mystery -- a stunning debut that examines the complexities of the human mind and the cost of discovering the truth.
Review: This book was really good, for awhile. I liked getting the backstory of Detective Ryan and Cassie. I also like how bits and pieces of his past crept into this story. However for me that's as far as it went.
When the actual murderer...ok not actual..but ....AGH...I don't want to give away anything...but as soon as this particular character was introduced.....I knew they had something to do with Katy's murder, so much so I had to jump to the end to see if I was right. And I was.
GAH!
After that, getting those last 200 pages read was a chore. On top of it all, the author leads us to believe we might get some resolution on Detective Ryan's past, don't get your hopes up for that, either.
What Tana French does deliver is a mystery with a really quirky bunch of charcters. Through 90 % of the novel, you like most of them. The big problem, however is the ending. It just doesn't satisfy. At least not me. I like resolution when it comes to mysteries, and this one doesn't really have that completely, which made this a frustrating read for me.
