Book Lovin' Bitches Book Tour Guest Post: Karina Halle

Darkhouse by Karina HalleDarkhouse

by Karina Halle

Paperback, 323 pages

Published May 1st 2011 by Metal Blonde Books

ISBN: 9781461079859

There’s always been something a bit off about Perry Palomino. Though she’s been dealing with a quarter-life crisis and post-college syndrome like any other twenty-something, she’s still not what you would call “ordinary.” For one thing, there’s her past which she likes to pretend never happened, and then there’s the fact that she sees ghosts. Luckily for her, that all comes in handy when she stumbles across Dex Foray, an eccentric producer for an upcoming webcast on ghost hunters. Even though the show’s budget is non-existent and Dex himself is a maddening enigma, Perry is instantly drawn into a world that both threatens her life and seduces her with a sense of importance. Her uncle’s haunted lighthouse provides the perfect catalyst and backdrop for a mystery that unravels the threads of Perry’s fragile sanity and causes her to fall for a man, who, like the most dangerous of ghosts, may not be all that he seems.

Guest post by Karina Halle:

Why Book Bloggers are Awesome

Hey everyone. My name’s Karina Halle and I’m the author of Darkhouse and Red Fox, the first two books in the Experiment in Terror Series. This eight-part series centers on 22-year old Perry Palomino and her partner Dex Foray, a pair of amateur ghost hunters who discover that the only thing more challenging than dealing with the dead is dealing with each other.

Pithy blurb aside, I’m here today to talk about everyone’s favorite topic: Book Blogs! And mainly, why they are so damn awesome.

I’m no stranger to blogging. I started my personal blog, Anywhere But Here, in February 2006, as an experiment of sorts. My Media Law teacher in journalism school had encouraged us to explore it as the “next best thing” in the world of writing and journalism. Even though I’m notorious for never seeing projects through, my blog is still running to this day (though sadly neglected). That’s over five years of writing about everything from travel, to relationships, to photography, to fashion, to music and to whatever the hell it is now (aside from being sadly neglected). Having dabbled in all these genres, I have good authority to state that I’ve never seen such love and support as it I have in the book blogging community.

Sure, my personal blog, when it was just me bitching about my job(s) and stupid things I did, did draw a feeling of community and unity from other like-minded bloggers. And when I was travel blogging it was sort of the same deal. Then came the fashion side of things. Now, my blog was never “fashionista” enough to be a threat or even popular, so all the fashion bloggers I got to know were really sweet, kind people. But I would see it on other blogs, this impending wash of jealousy from bloggers who weren’t as big, didn’t get as many freebies and didn’t have as many hits as the more popular blogs did. You know, the “why does she get to design shoes for Urban Outfitters and I don’t”, “I’d get more freebies if I was that thin”, that sort of thing.

Music bloggers are even worse. For my day job I write for a well-known music blog (or two) and I can see how little support there is in that industry (in fact, I write for two competing sites). Though the smaller blogs are more likely to reach out and support each other, the bigger blogs are just as snarky as their hipster commentors. It’s all about the site visits, all about getting the latest scoop, about giving an album the fairest (or most scathing) review and getting the best access to concerts and festivals. I’ve even been swooped into that whole competitive mindset myself and it’s not a pretty place to be.

But book blogs…my, what a breath of fresh air! Now, being as I am not a book blogger and am just an impartial reader, I can’t say that book blogs don’t have behind the scenes catfights over ARC’s and who has more followers, because they might. But from what I have seen and heard, book bloggers, as a whole, have developed a delightful support system and online neighborhood. They read and recommend each other’s blogs, they partake in lively debates and discussions about books and reviews, they help each other out in locating copies of books or participate in book swaps. It’s wonderful, really. Maybe it’s because books are personal and subjective. Maybe because reading a book involves time, patience and commitment, so bloggers are less likely to get nasty about something that takes up so much of their time already. Maybe it’s because the book blogging genre is just becoming popular now, so we have yet to see what all the benefits of running a successful book blog would be. Maybe it will all change if certain blogs get press in the media or find ways to make a living off of it. You never know. But I sincerely hope not. As an author, your success relies entirely on unbiased yet kind word-of-mouth. If that were taken away and replaced with pettiness and immaturity, authors like myself would suffer, as would the readers who deserve a friendly place to come read up on the latest book and make friends with fellow bookmates.

So with that all said, what are your thoughts on the book blogging community?

Author Interview: Lindsay Buroker Book Lovin' Bitches Book Tours

Lindsay can you tell us a bit about The Emperor’s Edge?

The Emperor's Edge (a high fantasy mystery in an era of steam)The Emperor’s Edge is a high fantasy mystery adventure novel set in an era of steam. There are monsters, steam-powered mazes, wizards, assassins, and scheming villains. The heroine is a bit of a schemer herself, and she’s the kind of gal who might save the day…but not without getting herself in a lot of trouble first!

EE is currently available as an ebook, and I’ll be doing a print version soon. I’ll also be putting it out as a free podiobook where you can listen to it in segments, sort of like the old radio serials.

Here’s the blurb:

Imperial law enforcer Amaranthe Lokdon is good at her job: she can deter thieves and pacify thugs, if not with a blade, then by toppling an eight-foot pile of coffee canisters onto their heads. But when ravaged bodies show up on the waterfront, an arson covers up human sacrifices, and a powerful business coalition plots to kill the emperor, she feels a tad overwhelmed.

Worse, Sicarius, the empire's most notorious assassin is in town. He's tied in with the chaos somehow, but Amaranthe would be a fool to cross his path. Unfortunately, her superiors order her to hunt him down. Either they have an unprecedented belief in her skills... or someone wants her dead.

What was your inspiration for The Emperor’s Edge?

I’ve had these characters kicking around in my head for a long time, so I’m not sure where they came from or what inspired me exactly. I did realize, as I was writing the epilogue, that I was doing a fantasy version of the A-team, so I guess I can blame being a child of the 80s as partial inspiration.

I knew I wanted to do a series, so the first book had to explain how these misfits (don’t tell them I called them that) all got together and how the lone woman ended up in the leadership position. Other than that, I just wanted to do a fun story with a mystery and plenty of action to keep things rolling along.

You write sci-fi/fantasy, what do you think is the reason that this genre has stayed popular?

Well, I’m not sure it’s all that popular when compared to other genres, but I imagine people like the infinite possibilities science fiction and fantasy provide. Especially with the stuff that takes place “in a galaxy far, far away,” it’s a true escape from your world and your problems.

Are there any authors in that genre that inspired you to write this genre?

I discovered fantasy in middle school, and R.A. Salvatore and David Eddings were the first authors I read. Before that I was reading historical fiction.

I still remember my first fantasy book was Salvatore’s Homeland. I guess it’s a good thing I liked it, or I might not have gone on to try others in the genre!

Too, I always give a nod to Lois McMaster Bujold as an author I admire. Her Vorkosigan books aren’t fantasy, but they’re very character-driven, and her heroes are lovable but flawed. That’s what I strive for with my stories.

You write children’s books as well. Is your writing process any different?

My children’s adventures are aimed at middle-grade readers, so I try to keep the sentences a little less complex and the overall stories shorter. I have a novel I’m hoping to publish with my goblin heroes this summer, and that’ll run 50-60k words (Emperor’s Edge is 105k).

I’m not afraid to throw in the vocabulary words though. Reading on a kindle or nook makes it easy for kids to look them up!

What made you decide to go Indie to publish your books?

Probably whatever silly trait made me go to work for myself instead of applying for jobs so I could toil for someone else. I like calling the shots and doing things my way.

I haven’t written off the idea of ever looking for an agent or a publisher, but I imagine that will be easier if I make a name for myself first and have fans who will buy my books (these people rock, by the way!).

Do you feel more in control publishing independently?
Encrypted
Absolutely. I also love how speedy the process is. I finished my second novel, Encrypted, in October, and published it in January. It probably would have taken two years to hunt down an agent, find a publisher, and have the book out and available to buy. I’m sure I’ll have several more ebooks finished and published in that time!

Thanks for the interview opportunity! Folks can grab my novels at Amazon, Smashwords, and Barnes & Noble, among other places.

Book Review: Untameable Book Lovin' Bitches Etours

Book Blurb: Eight years ago Lily Swanson left Havashaw County with a broken heart. Now circumstances have brought her back to the cowboy who still drives her crazy. Seeing him again stirs erotic memories, but the pain of his betrayal refuses to be soothed with a sexy smile.

Lily left him. That inescapable fact drives Thor Hanson to succeed more than any other. Her return to Havashaw triggers anger, lust and regret, but when she reveals the truth behind her leaving, he's determined to rein her in and show her that what they have is more than a memory.

Neither can deny their passion, as untamable as the broncs Thor trains. But will it be enough, and can Thor convince Lily she's right where she belongs?

Review: If you can pull your eyes away from the cover you will find a short, very spicy read by Becca Dale. Lily and Thor have a past. A past that was a good one until Thor had an accident and said something stupid.

Up until it is revealed why Lily ran off on Thor, you could like him. He is exactly how a cowboy should be. He's all manly and a touch bit arrogant.  He risks his life to help a child, while endangering his own by riding a horse that nearly crippled him years back.

Death wish? Possibly.

Lily is a little harder to like. She ran off without a fight when she loved someone and then stayed away for 8 years? I wanted to smack her quite a bit. However, once I found out the backstory on Thor's accident, I wanted to smack him. Rodeo circuit or not his behavior was pretty out of line.

Yet these two manage to fall back into bed together for some pretty steamy....glass of ice water for the reader sex.  Sex is really what pulls them back together yet there is obviously love on both of their parts. I really wished this were longer than it was, because I would have liked to have really known what made Thor and Lily tick.

Becca wrapped things up nicely for the pair, giving them the happily ever after, you know they are going to get, but you did feel like there should be more.

Book Lovin Bitches Book Tour & Review: Venice Vampyr

Venice Vampyr (Venice Vampyr #1)
Author: Tina Folsom
Title: Venice Vampyr

Book Blurb: Venice, early 1800s
Isabella Tenderini, a wealthy merchant's widow rescues a stranger from drowning in one of Venice's canals. And how does the man repay her selfless act? By kissing her - her, a respectable woman.

Not only is Raphael di Santori grateful for his life being saved, he would also like to thank his rescuer very intimately - more intimately than decorum allows. But then, Raphael has never been one to play by the rules - as a vampire he doesn't have to.

Review:  Tina Folsom is truly a master when it comes to erotic fiction, with a paranormal twist, of course. Anyone who has read her Scanguard Vampire series knows that she writes a great sexy vampire story.

Venice Vampyr is all that, and a historical story as well. It is also smoking hot. It is so hot, that a cold shower is recommended after the last page is turned. Isabella rescued Raphael from drowning, because that was the fate her first husband suffered. She takes him into her home to nurse him back to health, however she finds herself attracted to him from the very start.

Its this attraction that gets her in trouble with her late husband's cousin and results in her quicky marriage to Raphael. Raphael then discovers that Massimo is more than just a hateful cousin out to ruin, Isabella to get to her fortune, he's a vampire slayer! (of the sort) Isabella, doesn't know that her new husband is a vampire, but not to worry, she'll find out!

It is hard for an author to really develop characters in about 130 pages, but Tina has done it.  You learn a lot about Isabella, probably more so than Raphael.  You even get a good backstory on her first husband. That ties in with "The Guardians."  She's a very strong character that follows her heart, even when her head might be saying something different.

My only gripe is that this was a novella. I would have loved a full story about Isabella and Raphael. I definitely would have liked to have learned more about his past and a bit more about "The Guardians."  It would have been a little something to fill the pages between the sex scenes, and this story was full of those.

I highly recommend this story if you are a fan of erotic fiction and if you like vampires, it is definite must read. Also, check out the sequel Venice Vampyr: Final Affair

Book Lovin Bitches Book Tour & Review: Spiral X #11

Spiral X (The Eternal War)

Book Blurb: Cheryl Erikson is a Vampire Hunter with a problem. A dangerous new drug named Plast has found its way onto the streets of Dallas. She would prefer to let the DEA and local law enforcement handle everything, but since the dealers also happen to be vampires, she has no choice but to step in and put a stop to it.

With the help of her best friend Virgil and a fellow Hunter named Tank, Cheryl must work to eradicate Plast from the streets of Dallas. It's a task that becomes more difficult as she comes under the gun, quite literally, from a contract out on her head. Coupled with a nosy police detective looking to peg her for a triple homicide, and a sudden interest in her activities from a powerful vampire recently arrived in the area, it's enough to force her to accept help from the least likely of sources, a mysterious Hunter named Rev. Through him, everything she thinks she knows, and everything she stands for, is challenged in ways she never imagined.

Review: Spiral X is not your typical vampire story. I was thrilled to dive into a book where the vampires weren't civilized. The vampires Cheryl hunts are downright evil and they are part of a nasty drug operation in Dallas/Fort Worth.

This book was very fast paced and Cheryl felt like a more grown up, ass kicking Buffy, with a touch of the characters from Demons.  She's a hunter, but I kept thinking, she's smiting those vamps! She was totally bad ass. There's no other way to describe her and so are most of her friends. And that cast of characters is really interesting, from Virgil, her homosexual BFF, Tank, a fellow hunter, to the crooks and teachers she's had throughout the years.

Westendarp really creates some "real" characters and though they have some fantastic abilities, he keeps the humanity there too. It was great to see a character like Cheryl, be able to kick butt and still be heartbroken over the loss of her "uncle" Don.  People will like Cheryl because she's so strong and as you learn more about her, you marvel at how she can be that way at 22.

Westendarp also offers a lot of twists and turns as Cheryl seeks to uncover the source of the drug Plast, while ridding her turf of any vamps and demons that come her way. It really makes for a gripping read.  He also offers an interesting take on the vampire legend.

Here's hoping he decides to continue with Cheryl's character in the future. I think there could be a lot of interesting stories that could wrap around her character.

Book Lovin' Bitches Book Tour Book Review: Gabriel's Mate #6

Gabriel's Mate: Scanguards Vampires (Volume 3)
Author: Tina Folsom
Title: Gabriel's Mate
Publisher: Createspace
Publish Date: Dec 13, 2010
Book Provided By: Book Lovin' Bitches Book Tours & the author
Buy: Amazon

Book Blurb: After Maya is turned into a vampire against her will, vampire and Scanguards bodyguard Gabriel is charged with protecting her and finding her attacker.
Gabriel has never guarded a body as perfect as Maya's. Moreover, Maya's enticing blend of vulnerability and strength is difficult to resist. Yet resist he must. Even as the sexual tension between them rises and the rogue vampire closes in on them, Gabriel refuses to give into his desire. Despite the intimacies they share, Gabriel fears that if he ever reveals himself fully to her, Maya will react like other women have, running from him, and calling him a monster, a freak, a creature not worth her love.

Will Maya prove to be the one female who cherishes all that Gabriel is?

Caution: graphic and explicit sex scenes - not for the faint of heart.

Review:
It has been ages since I've read any vampire fiction, and even longer for any erotic fiction, but there was something about Tina Folsom's Gabriel's Mate that drew me in and once I started reading, I was hooked. This is the 3rd book in the series of Scanguard Vampires, and I want to read the other two now, because this one was so good!

Tina Folsom has created vampires that aren't wishy washy and are comfortable with who they are.

Three cheers for that!

Gabriel was by far one of the best vampires I've encountered. He was a vampire, but his human side was really strong.  I loved how strong his sexuality was, even though he wasn't a ladies man...erm...vampire. Gabriel has some issues...ok, he has a deformity and it pretty much keeps the ladies at bay, but Maya changes all of that. She sees past the scar he received on his wedding night and she sees past that other thing too, until they find out the reason for it...and then...well all is well.

What really made this story work was how Tina really kept the focus on the plot and didn't let the sex take over. Sure the love scenes were five alarm, but they weren't out of place and it wasn't sex written just to write it. It all made sense and helped the flow of the story.

The only issue I had dealt with the "rogue" vampire who changed Maya.  I knew who it was much too soon, but thankfully it didn't make me want to find out how the rest of the characters figured it out.

This was a great book, and it definitely can be read without having read the other books, however after you finish it you'll want to grab the other two.
