TLC Book Tours Book Review: I Found You

Author: Lisa Jewell
Title: I Found You
Publisher: Atria
Publish Date: April 25, 2017
Book Blurb: A young bride, a lonely single mother, and an amnesiac man of dubious origin lie at the heart of New York Times bestselling author Lisa Jewell’s next suspenseful drama that will appeal to fans of Liane Moriarty and Paula Hawkins.

In a windswept British seaside town, single mom Alice Lake finds a man sitting on the beach outside her house. He has no name, no jacket, and no idea how he got there. Against her better judgment, she invites him inside.

Meanwhile, in a suburb of London, twenty-one-year-old Lily Monrose has only been married for three weeks. When her new husband fails to come home from work one night she is left stranded in a new country where she knows no one. Then the police tell her that her husband never existed.

Twenty-three years earlier, Gray and Kirsty are teenagers on a summer holiday with their parents. Their annual trip to the quaint seaside town is passing by uneventfully, until an enigmatic young man starts paying extra attention to Kirsty. Something about him makes Gray uncomfortable—and it’s not just that he’s playing the role of protective older brother.

Review: This book left me gobsmacked. It was a wonderful read.

This story was told from 3 different points of view, Alice and the man who lost his memory, Lily, whose husband has vanished and Gray and his family in flashbacks from 1993.

When you start reading you really wonder how all these people tie in together, because you know they have to, and you really wonder what it is that links these stories.

It takes a long while getting there. I didn't find the pacing of this story to be too fast, which could be a problem at times, but I was too keyed up wondering about what was going to happen next.

Yes, this book made me nervous, especially when I was reading the parts set in 1993.

I feared for Gray and his sister the whole time.

What really surprised me was how much I disliked most of the characters. They were all seriously flawed. Alice was a hot mess. Lily blindly married a man that she really didn't know. Gray and Kirsty were the only ones that you could really like. They were typical teenage siblings. Yet no matter my personal feelings about these characters, I couldn't stop reading. I desperately wanted to know what happened,or what was going to happen.  The last time I found myself invested in characters I didn't like was Gone Girl. (Gah how I hated everyone in that book)

Lisa Jewell writes great suspense. Her books keep you on the edge of your seat, and this one really did that.

Book Blurb: Eleven years ago, Jem Catterick and Ralph McLeary fell deeply in love. They thought it would be forever, that they’d found their happy ending. As everyone agreed, they were the perfect couple. Then two became four, and an apartment became a house. Romantic nights out became sleepless nights in. And they soon found that life wasn’t quite so simple anymore. But through it all, Jem and Ralph still loved each other. Of course they did.

Now Jem is back at work part-time as a talent agent. Ralph, a successful painter, is struggling to come up with new, hopefully groundbreaking, work for his upcoming show. But the unimaginable has happened. Two people who were so right together are starting to drift apart And in the chaos of family life, Jem feels like she’s losing herself, while Ralph, stuck on the sidelines, feels like he’s lost his muse altogether. Something has to change. As they try to find a way back to each other, back to what they once had, they both become momentarily distracted—but maybe it’s not too late to recapture happily ever after…

Review: After the Party is a sequel to Ralph's Party...and for some, the book might be better received if the first book is read...well....first. However, as I read, I found that After the Party could stand alone. Lisa gives enough backstory that you don't really need to have all the details of how they got together.

What will surprise most...well, at least it did me, is that Jem and Ralph aren't married. The way the story read, they felt like a married couple, but only Jem acted like she was part of one...for the most part.

Jem and Ralph are two characters that are really not very likable. It is difficult to believe that these two managed to get together at all, they seem that intensely different in what they want out of life. Both are selfish and stubborn and it was difficult to hope for the best for them as their relationship deteriorates.

This couple is very real, maybe too real for readers looking to escape "real life" when it comes to their reading.

What was most surprising is the "happily ever after", because these two people certainly didn't seem to deserve it.
