Great Escapes Book Tours Book Review: No Gravestone Unturned

Author: Debbie De Louise

Title: No Gravestone Unturned

Publisher: Solstice Publishing

Publish Date: Oct 5, 2020

Book Blurb:

It’s October in Cobble Cove, and Alicia is busy preparing for the library’s Halloween party when she learns that John’s aunt from Florida has died and that John’s cousins and their spouses are coming to town to bury their mother. The day after the funeral, the caretaker’s son is found dead by John’s grandfather’s gravestone, from a blow on the head. The only witness seems to be Sneaky the library cat, who, having left the library, turned up at Alicia’s door with blood and dirt on him.

As Alicia, Gilly, and Sheriff Ramsay investigate, a generation of family secrets is uncovered. Is one of the guests staying at the inn a killer? Will the humans solve the crime, and can Sneaky, Kittykai, and Salem, the inn’s guest cat, team up to help

Review: This is a short fun Halloween-y cozy. It was a little slow to start for me, but since I hadn't read any of the other books in the series, it was nice to get to know the characters better in that time.  Its book 5 in the Cobble Cove series, but like all cozies you can just dive into this fun mystery.

I really enjoyed getting to know Alicia, John, and their friends and furbabies in this book. The murder involve a lot of family secrets, which you learn about through some flashback scenes. Then there are the kitties, who are more than just family pets.  I love when the animals become actual characters. Kind of like the Sneaky Pie mysteries.

There's a lot going on with Alicia and John as the mystery progresses. I really loved learning the family secrets and the connection to the murder and some other nasty goings on.

It was an entertaining read that kept me on my toes.

I loved that it kept me guessing too.

A perfect seasonal read!

Great Escapes Book Tours Book Spotlight: Hollyberry Homicide

Hollyberry Homicide (A Berry Basket Mystery) by Sharon Farrow

About Hollyberry Homicide

Hollyberry Homicide (A Berry Basket Mystery)

Cozy Mystery 5th in Series Publisher: Kensington (September 29, 2020)

Mass Market Paperback: 288 pages

ISBN-10: 1496722620 ISBN-13: 978-1496722621

Digital ASIN: B082WQTC18

A cold wind is blowing off Lake Michigan, and murder is scaring the dickens out of everyone . . .

Considering her name, Marlee Jacob is an obvious choice for the role of Jacob Marley in Oriole Point’s production of A Christmas Carol. It’s just sad that the role has opened up because of the death of the elderly actor who’d originally been cast.

But Marlee, the proprietor of The Berry Basket, will do her best to keep spirits high—that is, until clues start mounting that there’s danger behind the scenes. There are accidents on set, the tree in the village square topples over, and worst of all, a body is found with a sprig of holly draped over it. If Marlee can’t wrap up the case, she may not have a berry merry Christmas . . .

Includes Berry Recipes!

Review:Trying to read in the weeks leading up and after oral surgery is not easy, at least not for me, and I feel super sad about not being able to get this review posted.

This book is the fifth installment of the Berry Basket Series, which features Marlee Jacob as the proprietor of the Berry Basket shop.

Hollyberry Homicide is really an amazing cozy that revolves around a small town's production of A Christmas Carol. The classic tale plays a huge part in the plot and as part of the plot of this story.

Everret Hostetter is the wealthy old man that is found dead at the start of the novel. He's also the actor that plays Jacob Marley in Oriole Point's production of A Christmas Carol.  Now at 95 years old, most think that he simply died of old age, but then Marlee feeds one of the gingerbread cookies he had with him to a squirrel. When that critter up and dies, she knows there's more to his death than just old age.

Its a shame the local PD isn't taking her seriously, but that doesn't stop her from wanting to find out how he really died, all the while preparing for Hollyberry Festival and taking over Everret's part in the play. (She's not doing too well with the play)

Ms. Farrow does a wonderful job with her usual cast of characters and the list of possible killers that all have a chance at profiting from Everret's death. There are quite a few of them an let's just say Everret didn't lead the best of lives. So this old guy had few friends and he also knew to keep his enemies close.

When one of his only friends (and his attorney) also ends up dead, Marlee is sure there is more to both of these deaths.

I really loved how everything was tied together and a nice touch of drama at the end to wrap the story up.

If you love cozy mysteries with a whole lot of Christmas spirit (pun intended) this is definitely the book for you.

Great Escapes Book Tours Book Review: Checked Out For Murder

Checked Out for Murder: A Haunted Library Mystery by Allison Brook

About Checked Out for Murder

Checked Out for Murder: A Haunted Library Mystery

Cozy Mystery 4th in Series Publisher: Crooked Lane Books (September 8, 2020)

Hardcover: 320 pages

ISBN-10: 164385447X

ISBN-13: 978-1643854472 Digital ASIN: B082738ZNV

Carrie Singleton and Evelyn the ghost sleuth the slayings of a starlet and a star-crossed psychic in Agatha Award nominee Allison Brook's fourth Haunted Library mystery.

Daphne Marriott strolls into Clover Ridge and informs librarian Carrie Singleton that she's a psychic. But had she foreseen what fate awaited her, Daphne would have steered clear of the quaint Connecticut town. Evelyn, the library ghost, tells Carrie that there's more to Daphne than she lets on.

The mysterious woman grew up in Clover Ridge with her no-good dad, who apparently met his end at the hands of Daphne's brother, Billy. Still, Daphne proves a welcome distraction when Carrie's overbearing mother hits town. Mom's much younger husband, Tom, is in a movie that's lensing locally, and she's there to keep an eye on him: Tom's costar, sultry Ilana Reingold, is also his ex-fiancée, and there's no denying the chemistry is still there. Soon after mingling with the moviemakers at a meet-and-greet, Daphne is found dead.

Carrie and Evelyn investigate, assisted by bushy-tailed library cat Smoky Joe. But the suspect list could overflow the library shelves. Has Billy killed another relative? Is their long-missing mother involved? Or Daphne's mean ex-husband? Carrie's sure she knows who committed the crime, but can she bind together the clues before the culprit Dewey-decimates the town?

Review:  This is my first haunted library mystery and I have to say I really enjoyed it. I always love going to a cozy mystery after reading a rather heavy book.

Its got a bit of a paranormal twist with a ghost in the library, kind of like a Casper type ghosts who helps Carrie along with her sleuthing.

Carrie is dealing with her mother and step father who are in town making a movie. Plus her stepfather is staring in the movie with his ex fiancee. So there's a lot of drama there.

Two deaths occur during the making of the movie, one a recent arrival to town and the other one of the films stars.

I was really shocked by how little sleuthing Carrie actually did and how well the murders were connected as the book went on and for awhile how almost everyone was a suspect.

It was also interesting to see Carrie's relationship with her mom and her new husband. I have to say these are people I wouldn't want to claim as relations to me at any point.

I have to admit there was one character that I really wanted to be the killer buy wasn't.

The ending was definitely a twist especially in how the killer was related to one of the victims.

It was a light and enjoyable read.

Great Escapes Book Tours Book Review: Vangie Vale and the Larcenous Lava Cake

Vangie Vale and the Larcenous Lava Cake (The Matchbaker Mysteries)

by R.L. Syme

About Vangie Vale and the Larcenous Lava Cake

Cozy Mystery

I never thought Edward would come back...

When the court case against my ex was finished, I thought we were finished, too. But it turns out, it was only the beginning.

The Larcenous Lava Cake is book four in The Matchbaker Mysteries, a new cozy culinary mystery series from USA Today Bestselling Author, R.L. Syme.

RECIPE INCLUDED: The Larcenous Lava Cake

Review: Vangie's got herself in a lot of trouble in this book. This is the 4th book in the series. Sure you can read it as a stand alone, but there is a lot of back story that having read the other books might help it along for you.  (And really this is a wonderful series, so start from the beginning with this one)

Her ex is back and with him comes trouble. Her relationship with Derek is getting rocky. Oh and the building her bakery is in is about to be sold.  There's lots of stuff going on here. High drama at times. More so than I'm used to with a cozy mystery, but everything works well here and the story flows smoothly.

I love this series, but I have to admit, Vangie made some really dumb moves in this one and they definitely prove to give her some added trouble as the story progresses. (A lot more)  The main thing involves her ex and a not so little gift her left her.

This was really and engaging mystery because you want to find out what trouble Vangie has gotten herself into (I'm not going to give you any spoilers).

The ending of this book is a bit of a cliffhanger for the series and what's going to happen with Vangie and her life. I really hope there will be more books down the line, because I love the character

Definitely a great read and a great series.

Great Escapes Book Tours Book Review: Cast Iron Stake Through The Heart

Cast Iron Stake Through the Heart (The Cast Iron Skillet Mystery Series)

by Jodi Rath & Rebecca Grubb

About Cast Iron Stake Through the Heart

Cozy Mystery
4th in Series
Publisher: MYS ED LLC; 1 edition (May 29, 2020)
~200 Pages
ASIN: B081DD5CFB

On again, off again, ON AGAIN–Jolie Tucker and Mick Meiser are giving their relationship another try. Things seem to be working out for them so far, and love is on the menu all over Leavensport! An unexpected pregnancy with a surprising partner, a therapist pairs off with the chief of police, and the mayor of Leavensport falls for Jolie’s Aunt Fern!

Although Leavensport is serving up affairs of the heart, there are a lot of mysterious activities lurking in the air. The townspeople awake to find freshly dug empty holes throughout the fields that were recently up for sale under suspicious circumstances. Jolie and Ava believe they are taking a break from solving murders when they start teaching an online cooking course–until they witness one of their students take a stake through the heart!

Welcome to Leavensport, OH, where DEATH takes a DELICIOUS turn!

Review:  Jolie and Ava are at it again when they witness the death of one of their online students get it during class.

Wowzas!

I love how there's a sort of precursor to the crime when the cooking classes first start so that when the actual murder occurs, you are just like Jolie and Ava, not really sure it happened.

The classmates all have something in common too. So the mystery of why one friend from the "art cult" would be murdered is something to make you go "hmmm."

As the girls start unraveling secrets, and those girls from the class seem to have a lot of them, Jolie and her boyfriend Mick start to piece together their complicated relationship.

I really loved the twists and turn that the story took as the girls dug deeper into their students lives. I really didn't expect how things turned out in the end and that's an absolute bonus for me.

This was a fast paced, super fun read, with a whole lot of small town flair. A little bit of romance, a touch of quirkyness and of course a murder.

This was the first Cast Iron Skillet Mystery I've read, but it definitely won't be my last.

LUCKY IN LOVE AND LUCKY TO BE ALIVE. UNTIL NOW.

Maizie’s mixing with international stars, spies, and her mother’s dark past in her sixth case in The Wall Street Journal bestselling series.

"Hollywood glitz meets backwoods grit in this fast-paced ride on D-list celeb Maizie Albright's waning star. Sassy, Sexy, and Fun.” — Phoebe Fox, author of the Breakup Doctor series.

#WannabeDetectiving While ex-celebrity Maizie Albright’s dreams of becoming a for-real private investigator have not exactly been dashed, they have been slightly thwarted. Her ex-manager and still-mother, Vicki Albright, has taken the helm of Nash Security Services while rebuilding her entertainment management company. Sometimes with the same clients. Like Chinese action star, Lili Liang, who’s making the film Unlucky 18 in Georgia.

Thus far, Lili’s living up to her movie title. Her kung fu coach is missing. Her boyfriend’s disappeared. And her director, who gambled on her with the part, might be gambling with her life.

Maizie’s luck is also running out. Maizie and Nash find themselves struggling to balance a new partnership and new relationship between missing persons’ cases, wild goose chases, and tracking a bullet into dangerous places. Sometimes it’s enough to make a girl NOT want to put a ring on it. When it comes to facing an 18-caliber killer, what will Maizie put up as the target? Her heart or her life?

    18 CALIBER

Review: 18 Caliber is the latest book in the Maizie Albright Star Detective series. Its book 6. Having read her Cherry Tucker series, I thought I'd give this one a go.

Its a fun read, but for me, this is the first series that I really have to say start with book 1. Don't just jump in. On a plus, the first book is free right now. So yay, I'm going to go back to read that one. The reason I say this, is there is a lot of backstory for Maizie and Nash and her family that you may need to understand better.

This book definitely reminded me a bit of Meg Cabot's Heather Wells series, which I really enjoyed.

It took me awhile to get used to what was going on while they were investigating the disappearing people and the bullets in aquariums.

Maize is one part rich girl, one part bumbling PI wanna be. At times she's super frustrating, because you really just want to shake the crap out of her for how she reacts, but in the same vein she is also very lovable. Maybe part Stephanie Plum part Heather Wells.

Then there is her mother. OMG I never hated a character so much in all my life and I've hated a lot of characters. It was as though she didn't even love her daughter.

Nash was a great foil for Maizie. A not so perfect love interest that uses his head more than his heart in the investigation. I love the relationship dynamic between the two and that's part of the reason I have to go back and read this series from the beginning.

Again, this is a stand alone novel and you can read it apart from the others, but from my reading experience, it will probably be more enjoyable if you read the series from the beginning.

Great Escapes Book Tours Book Review: In An Instant

    In an Instant

    by Suzanne Redfearn

    About In An Instant

    Thriller/Women's Fiction
Publisher: Lake Union Publishing (March 1, 2020)
    Paperback: 331 pages
    ISBN-10: 1542006589
    ISBN-13: 978-1542006583
    Digital ASIN: B07NVD1276

A deeply moving story of carrying on even when it seems impossible.
Life is over in an instant for sixteen-year-old Finn Miller when a devastating car accident tumbles her and ten others over the side of a mountain. Suspended between worlds, she watches helplessly as those she loves struggle to survive.
Impossible choices are made, decisions that leave the survivors tormented with grief and regret. Unable to let go, Finn keeps vigil as they struggle to reclaim their shattered lives. Jack, her father, who seeks vengeance against the one person he can blame other than himself; her best friend, Mo, who bravely searches for the truth as the story of their survival is rewritten; her sister Chloe, who knows Finn lingers and yearns to join her; and her mother, Ann, who saved them all but is haunted by her decisions. Finn needs to move on, but how can she with her family still in pieces?
Heartrending yet ultimately redemptive, In an Instant is a story about the power of love, the meaning of family, and carrying on…even when it seems impossible.

Review: I don't think I can do this book justice in a review. It is just absolutely amazing and heartbreaking and just all the things that make you not want to put a book down EVER.

This  book about an accident that results in the death of a teenager and how all the survivors move on or try to, will just take all your emotions and get them in a total tizzy.

Finn, dies in an automobile accident that includes her bff her mom, dad, older sister, two family friends and their daughter.

Finn is left as a spirit to watch them as their lives crumble. Throughout most of the story, and even at the beginning, I found their mother hard to like. She was very self absorbed and I just didn't warm to her, even as the events unfolded. Sure she was strong and had great instincts, but ultimately, I hated her.

Mo is the character I loved and also Chloe, when it comes to the survivors. I had a hard time wrapping around the actions of Aubrey and Ben, who were to be married a few months after the accident? My little brain kept going, PEOPLE DIED and you aren't postponing the wedding?

But perhaps it is best not to discuss whether I liked certain characters or not. Its more what this story is about. Survival and the aftermath of loss.

And the two things that happened while they were in survival mode will leave you gobsmacked. (No spoilers..but SCREW YOU Bob!)

This book is super emotionally charged. There was another book I read awhile back that made me feel the same way was Elsewhere by Gabrielle Zevin. Similar only in that they involved the death of young person, but both left me in tears as I read them and both are books that I will recommend to anyone that asks for a great read. Just make sure you have a whole lot of tissues handy, because you will need them.
