Review: I'm totally obsessed with family stories that involve secrets.The main bulk of the story is set in the decade that I wish I had grown up in, the 60s.

This story is an emotional one, which is another thing that I tend to gravitate to when it comes to books. I like stories that pull me in like that. If a book can make me laugh, feel anxious or cry then I know it is a good read.

Jack and Libbie's relationship will draw you in like that. The were high school sweethearts from different social backgrounds. That is something that causes problems between the two, but there's more to it than that. Libbie's mental health is not good. and soon she gets mired in alcohol and drugs.

I felt terrible for both characters as Libbie's addiction took control of her, especially since no one seemed to really care about her actual health, except for Jack and he was getting no help where it was needed.

By the end of Jack and Libbie's story my heart had broken for both of them. Jack was so idealistic and so in love.

This story seems to remind us that money doesn't make a loving family. If you didn't want to hit every member of Libbie's family than you are totally unfeeling.

The second part of the story is Jack's daughter Emily and her quest to find the woman that her father married before her mother.  It was sad, because these two were meant for each other. It definitely is a storybook romance that went terribly wrong.

I wanted more of Emily's story. Her story was a little too short, wrapping things up quickly.

I liked the Emily wanted to find Libbie for her father. This could have been something that could have gone terribly wrong and brought up old hurts but it works well. It also shows what a good person Emily was. I know I probably wouldn't find someone my father loved before my mother.

I can't recommend this book highly enough, but if you do take the chance and read it, have some Kleenex handy, because you'll need them.

Review: For a person that doesn't see a lot of movies, I've been reading a lot of books that I end up thinking would make great films. Life After Coffee is one of them. Hey, Jennifer Aniston, here's your next comedy or maybe Tina Fey. I think both actresses would make a great Amy.

When a book makes me laugh from the very first page, I know I'm in for a ride. This was one of those books. It was laugh out loud funny in many places and in other places a touch ridiculous, but that is what made this such an awesome read.

There were many times as I read this that I wondered...Amy..why did you bother having children in the first place? Especially as we learn her life with coffee started before she met her husband Peter.

Peter was a kind of Mr. Mom, but not quite in the Michael Keaton kind of way. (Why am I still thinking in movies?) Most of the time I wasn't sure how I really felt about him. He was a bit of  a jerk when it came to understanding the financial situation of the family.

The life decisions most of the characters make may make you shake your head, but then again..most of us make some questionable ones. Amy definitely does, but she finds her way onto the straight and narrow pretty quickly.

This book is a light read and really such fun. The ending makes all of Amy's and Peter's missteps worthwhile.

Again, if you need a little humor in your reading life, you need to give this book a shot. You won't be disappointed!!

Review: I had seen this book on so many lists this spring and summer. I didn't realize until I was almost finished with the book that it was about real people. It probably would have helped me get through the the beginning of the book which really seemed to drag for me.

The real life characters are Caroline Ferriday and Herta Oberheuser. (Seriously if you don't want to have nightmares, don't read the wiki page on this woman.) She was evil or rather brainwashed. This book tells the story of how Caroline helped the French during the WWII and then worked to help the Polish women that were in the Ravensbruk concentration camp. She worked in the sulfanilimide experiments.

Kasia is one of those women she experimented on. Her story is really a sad one, but one of strength. She's the fictional character in this story. She's the "rabbit" that figures into Herta's life.

This book shows many sides of WWII. So it isn't pretty, but war is seldom pretty. It doesn't glorify the war either. It shows all the hatred that was there at the time.

Caroline's story was an exceptionally sad one in some ways, but then again, who am I to say how she really was.

This book was a bit slow and with the changing points of view made it slog on. At times these quick switches made the book feel choppy.  It wasn't until I reached the final part of the story that I felt things were moving along. I shed many tears during Part III. The last part of this book is the most emotional, especially with Kasia and her relationship with her family.

This wasn't a perfect read, but it was good one and one I'd recommend to people that enjoy historical fiction about WWII.
